Belmont thread

Glimmerglass - you said what I was going to say - thanks. Some people seem to love to gloat.
YES! I just called and friend to say that…but I thought maybe I was just “seeing things”.
We noticed that as well…matter of fact my husband starting yelling…he’s LAME as he started pulling back. I noticed that he swapped leads several times…not up on racing, but I’m assuming that isn’t normal?

But then everyone on TV swore that he looked just fine…so I thought that we must have just been looking for something.

Do you guys think if there is something wrong with him that the truth will really come out? Honest question, I swear. I’m just curious if they would be forthcoming with that information.

I’m not positive but I don’t think horses are allowed to run on steroids in NY…if so then it wasn’t the trainer’s decision.

Steroid let down in humans is immense…I would assume it’s going to have some definite results in animals too.

I don’t understand why they would have taken a chance taking him off the Steroids for the biggest race of his career.

Could Steroids possibly be the result of his previous wins? And how will that affect his breeding? Will mare owners be willing to breed knowing this Stud cannot perform unless on Steroids? IF that is indeed the fact?

Just quite a coincidence Kent had no horse compared to the Derby and Preakness.

Bummer!

It just wasn’t his day! Just love these arm chair vets saying hes lame.
You would look lame too if someone was pulling you up from a dead gallop!
The horse is fine, Give it a rest.
Oh and BRAVO to KEnt! Great horseman, no sense letting him gallop on when he knew he had no horse.
Good on him. And for the nasty remarks about Rick?? Come one people! Show some class!
I bet he runs in in the BC Classic! Still an awesome Animal.:slight_smile:

The announcer’s addressed this…Steriods are legal in all three Triple Crown Race States…they had taken BB off of steriods to prove a point.

I thought, but I could be wrong, that steroids are allowed in NY.

I’m not up on my racing…but Dutrow turned me off pretty quickly with all his pompous interviews…sorry (as Simon Cowell would say).

bled?
This was my first thought, too…
Okay – so I’m not exactly up on horse racing, but what does (the above) that mean, exactly?

Thanks!

Just my OPINIONS. 1. Can’t call a horse GREAT when it’s only had 5 starts. 2. Do we ACTUALLY know there were no drugs used? If BB won the Derby and Preakness on them, I just can’t see Dutrow taking him off of them for the most important race of his life. 3. Was really hot today, and BB not use to that. 4. Of course Kent was going to pull him up when BB didn’t respond. When you’re looking at finishing last after all the hype, you have to give the impression something MUST be wrong - whether it is or not. Kent got off the horse and immediately started taking his tack off. He didn’t look over him or show a lot of concern on his face. He untacked and walked away. 4. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR SECRETARIAT!!! That said, hope BB is ok and what a shame the winner wasn’t in the spotlight as he should have been. Could a 22 yr old have a bigger smile on his face???:):):):):) SHAME ON ABC!!!

I know I’m a cynic, but my thoughts were that if Dutrow really didn’t know why the vet gave “every horse in the barn” steroids as he claimed after the Derby, that I guess he knows now.

I hope Big Brown is fine and I still was disappointed for his loss. Awesome- perfect ride by the winning jockey.

what steroids do.

I’ve seen a little, a very little, of what steroids can do in dogs and horses and humans.
let’s see, in the guy who worked with me, he used them for bulking up for weightlifting, and won championships in georgia, the steroids can cause heart attacks, oh, and the medical literature (didn’t look at the guy who worked with me) says steroids shrink the gonads. ask a doctor.
in dogs, use of vetalog for years for allergies can cause liver cancer, long term effects,
in horses, can cause laminitis/founder.
strong stuff. look at pix of barry bonds before and after.
so you figure if he took one steroid shot a month for however long he was on them, look how big he is, how big were his sire and dam, and got all that bulked up, then when he went off of them, he went back to being a normal horse. He is a big bulky horse. steroids pump up the muscles.
hope he is ok and that he runs again. with a different trainer.

I have to admit, but that was the first thing that came to mind when he pulled up and walked off fine, or what appeared to me to be fine.
I hope they don’t come up with some lame excuse and pack him off to stud.

We wondered this as well. Great post, I totally agree.

I don’t have a conspiracy theory, sorry

Hot day. Big horse. Third and longest race in five weeks. Perhaps, got jostled a big more than usual in the early going and that got to him.

But really, he looked sound pulling up, and walking back to the barn, and walking 'round the shedrow.

It’s hard to win the Triple Crown. Lots of good horses, and a few really great ones, haven’t done it.

As Sannois said, it just wasn’t his day. And I think I recall correctly that the favorite only wins 33% of the time.
Well said, thank you. I think it is horrible to delight in someone else’s misfortune.
If he were any kind of real sportsman, he would have made a statement to the press and congratulated the winner’s connections instead of sulking in the corner like a spoiled child who didn’t get his way. Waahh!

I’ll save my sympathy for BB’s jockey and offer my congrats to Da’ Tara and Nick Zito. Well done!

BB is in the barn with all 4 legs and alive…that makes me a happy. I would not have been able to handle another catastrophic injury. When he disappeared off the screen I got a huge lump in my throat.
Great horse had a bad day.

I could barely leave the house at times today(it was so hot). I can’t imagine having to run like they did. My lazy beasts were under their fans all day.

Excuse me, I am not a vet; however, I have owned horses for over 30 years and have a pretty sharp eye when it comes to spotting lameness. The horse absolutely looked off on the left front to me —at the walk – as he was cooling out. And none of the other horses were walking like that and they ran a lot faster than he did.

You know, I can pretty much believe that steroids won’t make a great horse, and there are a host of good reasons to ban them (I support every last one of them) without wondering will the quality of horse racing decline.

But what nobody here has seemed to grasp (or voice) is that while giving steroids may not a Triple Crown winner make, withdrawing them has a far different set of consequences. Ask every last person who works with OTTBs, especially our CANTER friends. They will tell you all about Steroid Crash.

Do I think BB is looking like the Darfur victims that show up 90 days post track life in various CANTER pastures around the country? Of course not. Do I think taking a horse of his regular “hit” just before a) the longest race of his life and b) the busiest race schedule in his life might just possibly affected his strength, endurance and ability to finish strong? Oh, just a wee bit.

Rick Dutrow, Dumb***k. I mean you figure the one bit of knowledge HE could have bought to the table was how coming down or detoxing affects the wellbeing of the body.

ETA - it’s good to see for as many years as this BB has been around people still see lame horse when they are being pulled up or jig jogging sideways on the way back. Thank heavens for consistency!

Get over the steroids!

Horses have been running on steroids for decades. Including greats like Secretariat. Really, I think that has become an overblown issue. I’m not against stopping the use of them, but really, it’s not a new thing in horse racing!
