Bensmom saddle soap - the review thread (if that's okay with Bensmom)

I think we should have a contest–whoever is able to retrieve the soap from the wall wins a browband and saddle soap!

It’s a bit like Arthur and the sword in the stone .

How about a vacuum cleaner? If you use a shopvac, the hose may be able to fit all the way down the half wall, then just suck up that baby! Either it sticks to the hose, or goes in the shopvac container, but better than lost forever!

(I can totally use more soap and a browband, being horseless and all)

I have a wet/dry vac, but no way it is big enough to suck up a container of saddle soap. Also doubt it would have strong enough suckage to just hold onto it.

I wonder if I could fashion a sort of spear-fishing apparatus out of a broom handle, duct tape, and a large knife, and plunge the knife deep into the soap (the lid is off b/c I was cleaning tack) and pull it up that way. This is gonna have to happen on a day when I get there before BO comes home from work, though.

That sounds like it would work! How far down is it? How wide is the space inside the wall?

Soap is here and it’s to die for!!

Seriously, you like it? You really, really like it? Yay!!

Do any local shops carry this stuff? I want to give it a try with all the awesome reviews, but the price is a little steep to just try for the heck of it. :o I browsed the first few pages, but this thread is giant… Can someone compare it to other saddle soaps on the market as a point of reference?

I would guess the wall is about 5-ish feet high, and the space between is…maybe 6 inches? I took some pics. Haven’t been able to try the jerry-rigged spear fishing apparatus b/c I don’t want BO to think I’m a complete loon! I’ll have to get out there early while she’s still @ work one day.

Oh my gosh, yes, I love it! In a way it reminds me of Starla’s Sugar and Spice, in that it has kind of a soft smell. I sniffed my vanilla mint when Striker’s arrived, and that has a sort of sharper/harsher smell (still yummy and delicious, just a different “nose feel”). Striker’s is sweet and citrusy and rich and creamy, but not heavy or overwhelming.

Well_Worn_Bridle, I don’t know if Bensmom has gotten any tack stores to carry it, but if you post your location someone might be close enough to lend you some. But IMO, it’s not necessary to try before you buy… It’s freaking amazing. I now have 8 containers of soap… I have one bridle and one saddle that I use regularly, and I haven’t ridden consistently in months. But the soap is worth stocking up on! Just buy it!

I’m near Harrisburg but frequently travel towards Gettysburg as well. I’m a bridle junkie… Nine (or ten?) nice bridles… One horse I school once a month. :o I clean tack in bed when I need to relax at night. I currently use- and like- TLC saddle soap, but it necessitates an hour drive to Hunt Valley Maryland to buy more, and comes in three so-so scents I could take or leave.

Could you compare this stuff to other products you’ve used in the past?

Yes. Better. Stop driving to Dover.

In the past, I’ve used Lexol, Leather Therapy, and plain glycerin saddle soap. Initially I thought this is at least as good, although the more I use it the more I love it, so I think it’s better.

When using other products, my tack cleaning tools always included a toothbrush and a butter knife get getting rid of stubborn gunk. Not anymore. For the vast majority of my cleaning, the included sponge is all I need. If I find some grunge that doesn’t come off easily, all I need is the corner of a towel rubbed in soap, and the extra texture gets the job done.

Unlike most other products, you don’t need to rinse the soap. It conditions nicely without leaving residue. I cleaned a bridle that had been hanging in the tack room unused for months… When I started, I figured I would need to condition or oil it, but just cleaning softened it up enough that additional conditioning was unnecessary.

One of these days I need to round up my old products (including about a quart each of Lexol soap and conditioner!) and get rid of them… They’re useless to me now, HSLC has ruined all other products for me.

Frizzle, I desperately want your BO to see you trying to spear your soap inside the wall. I bet it would be hilarious.

Frizzle, we need pictures of the soap retrieval device!

Well Worn, I like amastrike also have a collection of soaps and conditioners, including some that cost more than the HSLC. I’d give them away but all my friends now use HSLC as well and no one wants them so I’ll probably throw them out when we move. It’s seriously the best stuff I’ve ever used, no sticky residue, no icky feeling hands and it smells divine!

No pics of the apparatus (it has not yet been fashioned). But here is the wall: http://i1153.photobucket.com/albums/p511/Mirielle027/Mobile%20Uploads/image.jpg

And here is the poor lonely little vanilla mint soap: http://i1153.photobucket.com/albums/p511/Mirielle027/Mobile%20Uploads/image-1.jpg

I was so afraid that I would drop my phone down there next!

At least I will soon have my vanilla citrus. But I WANT my vanilla mint soap back!

Oooh idea… What if you used a gardening tool - like a small hoe? Or even hammer or something and duct taped it to the handle of a broom - or maybe a rake since they have longer handles I think and then pushed it up the wall? Where there is a will there is a way!

No no no, I got it! Get your stick and tape a spatula to the end. Insert, slide under soap, push to wall, and slide it up the wall. Et voila! Maybe have someone to grab when you get it up high enough.

Must be good stuff, this is officially the first time I have used up a container of any leather care product except for that German Bienenwachs conditioning paste.

Off to Etsy to order more. Vanilla Citrus sounds nice…

Jennifer

Sorry, one more question… Are all of the available scents listed on Etsy, or are other scents available by request?

Just wanted to add my little plug to this thread - I bought a number of the soaps for my horsey friends for Christmas, and kept some for myself as well. We all LOVE it! I can’t believe a product has gotten me to change from my previous leather care regimen, but the HS soaps are incredible. I’ve gotten dirt of my tack that I didn’t even know existed (I recleaned tack I thought was clean, and was shocked at the colour of the water, plus how much nicer the leather felt when I was done), and am just delighted as to how my tack feels afterwards. It’s done an amazing job on everything from my newest modern leather right down to my very, very old tack, including 100+ year old saddles. I am so glad I took the plunge and bought some!

Frizzle, I’m thinking a gardening tool, too- like one of those very narrow shovels?
