I’ve been slathering the insides of my dress shoes with the conditioner. Helps soften and stretch the leather and greases my feet so they don’t blister.
Sorry if this has been addressed before, but has anyone used the soap &/or conditioner on their Dubarrys? On the smooth leather or the pebbly leather? Were they still as waterproof after? I love both the soap & conditioner for my tack but am scared to use anything but Dubarry products on my Dubarry boots.
Vagabondrider – I don’t have any Dubarry’s myself, though I know other folks have used it without issue, but I can’t swear to it. If it is possible to search just this thread, you might find where someone said they had done it and it worked fine.
In fact, I will go and try that

I have DuBarry’s boots also, and only use their products on them, so please post your results, I am curious.
I have a leather cleaning business.
In these 77 pages, I am sure this has been addressed, but I have to be especially careful about residue or anything like that. In addition to tack, I condition leather auto upholstery, garments and furniture. It is imperative that customers do not get their clothes marred from sitting on leather that I have just conditioned.
Does anyone know how trustworthy Higher Standards conditioner is regarding the above concern? Should the leather be allowed to “rest”/the pores getting a chance to absorb the conditioner?
BTW, I bought Higher Standards conditioner about 2-3 months ago. I also have some other good quality leather conditioners for my customers as some people have their preferences in that regard.
Thanks!
HorseShine – I don’t know what others experience has been, but I always put it on, and then allow it to soak in or rest before I let fabric touch it. I haven’t had any problems with the conditioner staining anything, but it stands to reason that it certainly could. The ingredients were chosen to be moisturizing but not “greasy” but it does contain an oil – so I find that it is better to be careful.
Hope this is helpful!
Libby
I find that the conditioner takes hardly any time at all to be absorbed… it’s not greasy at all. If you apply too much, then a quick wipe with a soft towel removes any excess. I would not hesitate to use these products on any type of leather goods.
Any indication on when the Christmas scents will be coming out? I’m thinking of doing mini-pots as Christmas favors this year as everyone loves the scent of mine, but I need to account for shipping to Canada
Bensmom & VCT, Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I usually do wipe down the leather with a micro fiber cloth after it’s conditioned. I have a customer’s sofas to clean next week. I will advise them to allow the leather to “rest” for about an hour before using it.
Denzel - Great idea to order well ahead of time. I am in Canada too and you never know how fast or slow the postal service of two countries can be plus the customs process. Coming from Florida, my order took about 2 - 3 weeks to get here.
We don’t have a date set for the Christmas items to be available, but I will take into consideration the international shipping issues and discuss it with Mr. Bensmom, who is doing all of the production and shipping currently
Bensmom–first of all, I’m in love with your products. I’ve been actively seeking out leather things to clean, and the lemon soap I purchased through Jeffers smells like pie while the balm smells like chocolate. Two of my favorite things.
Second, I’m trying to convince my mother and the handbag designer she works for to give Higher Standards a try but my mother can’t use anything with sulfur–including some leather care products. Would your soap be ok?
ETA I’ve been a die-hard Effax girl for 15 years…but now I’ve been converted.

LOL that is usually how it starts! The scents seriously get me cleaning my tack more often!!! :).
I have are no idea if there is sulfur in the products or not but I will say my mother and are both horribly allergic to sulfur and I actually seek out soaps and shampoos without it (now that’s a task!) and HSLC doesn’t bother either one of us.
Oh, good! I didn’t even know I had a sulfur allergy tester handy!
As far as I know, there is nothing in the soap that would trigger any type of reaction in someone allergic to sulfur. However, the lawyer in me will insist that I state that I cannot promise that it is allergen free, and that if you have any concerns, it is best to always to a small patch test to be sure.
(Sometimes worrying about liability all the time takes the fun out of stuff, but can’t help it. The internal lawyer will not be denied! )
Excited! Just bought some plain bay. I was forced to clean out my storage locker awhile ago and found my old bridles - they’re in rather rough shape and need a good clean! Took advantage of the situation to finally order some of Bensmom’s soap
I’m thinking of using the soap on my leather interior in my car. Does anyone know of any reason why this wouldn’t work or shouldn’t be done?
I think I need to buy a new scent though. I have the spice one and while I love it I’m not sure I want my whole car to smell like that in the summer. In the winter, definitely though! Maybe I’ll just wipe them down and use the conditioner…

I’ve used HSLC soap to clean leather in three different cars. It works great. No residue, in fact the seats are actually less sticky because the HSLC cleans off the sweat. I didn’t use conditioner on any of the car leather because I didn’t feel it was needed.
IME, with plenty of tack and with car leather, the HSLC scents don’t stick around once the leather is dry. But I also clean my car’s seat leather with the doors open because otherwise, so maybe that’s a factor in how the scent dissipates.
Awesome, good to know, thank you! The scent doesn’t seem to linger on my tack but since it does on my hands, I wasn’t sure if it would in my car, But I think it’ll be the way to go once I get the last of the textbooks out of it.
So…I bought a soap and balm at Rolex this year. LOVE it!! However…I was dumb and left it in my car, upside down, yesterday, and both liquefied. There was some leakage, not sure if the heat warped the threads or if I didn’t have the lids on correctly.
Anyway, did I ruin the product? I left it in the house overnight… haven’t looked at it this morning yet. Will it still be fine to use when it firms up again?
It should be, though I have not had good luck when one has melted and the sponge becomes saturated. It seems like a good idea to have a sponge filled with the soap, but it in actuality, it just makes a mess.
It should not hurt the integrity of the products, but I haven’t had them melt unintentionally (i.e. the only time I’ve ever done it is to pour it up, so I’ve never held them at a high temp for a period of time like in a car).
So, COTHers – what do you say? Have any of you used your products after unintentional meltage?
