Bensmom saddle soap - the review thread (if that's okay with Bensmom)

The CWD Conditioner that was shipped with my new saddled arrived in July and about half the container was liquified when I opened the package. I contacted CWD who told me it was okay to use it and they were right. Once it was in my air conditioned house it hardened right up and worked beautifully right up until the last drop.

It should be, though I have not had good luck when one has melted and the sponge becomes saturated. It seems like a good idea to have a sponge filled with the soap, but it in actuality, it just makes a mess.

It should not hurt the integrity of the products, but I haven’t had them melt unintentionally (i.e. the only time I’ve ever done it is to pour it up, so I’ve never held them at a high temp for a period of time like in a car).

So, COTHers – what do you say? Have any of you used your products after unintentional meltage?
Thankfully, the sponge wasn’t in the tub. It firmed up well, and the color and texture seem the same. Plan on trying it tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for making such an awesome product, Bensmom

I just bought HSLC soap and balm from Jeffers and had pretty much cleaned all of my tack today. All of it had been in storage for 4 months and was pretty dry. I really like how the leather feels after using the soap and balm. I bought the rosemary mint soap. Love the scent!

I just found this thread (based on some other reviews about Higher Standards soap) and I have to ask… what is the BEST scent? I’m talking the regular scents, not the limited edition ones (because some of those sound AMAZING). I’d love to purchase a tub to try on my new western saddle, but I can’t decide on which scent to try.

First world problems over here.

What’s the BEST flavor of ice cream?

Everyone’s got different taste.

Our best seller is Fox’s Lavender Vanilla, but my personal favorites are Buzz’s Citrus Ginger and Woody’s Confidence Blend! Love the conditioner too, the faint cocoa scent is amazing!

I love them all but my personal favorite is the Woodys Confident Blend.

That was probably a pretty silly question, eh?

What I meant was, for anyone who has tried multiple scents of this soap, which one did you prefer personally? From the website, there isn’t a scent that didn’t sound lovely… I just need help narrowing it down to one to try before I go crazy and buy one of each.

So far, there are two votes for the Confidence scent, so that might be one to try.

I bought the Rosemary Mint scent. I like it but it’s more minty than rosemary. I might prefer the MOSS Citrus Basil scent more. Next time I buy soap I’ll probably try the HS lavender vanilla.

I have! Mine didn’t have the sponge in it though. I always keep two containers - one at home for boots, purses, and our couches, and one at the barn for tack. I was flip flopping the containers one day and left one in the car in the Texas summer heat where it was zapped in less than 20 minutes. It firmed back up and still seems to have the same cleaning power it did before.

Tried to make a request. Your pm box is full.
I have full harness and saddles/bridles,etc. and would love to find a good smelling soap.

DocTracy – I made room in the PM box, but the best place to reach me is higherstandardsfarm at gmail.com email address!

So…I bought a soap and balm at Rolex this year. LOVE it!! However…I was dumb and left it in my car, upside down, yesterday, and both liquefied. There was some leakage, not sure if the heat warped the threads or if I didn’t have the lids on correctly.

Anyway, did I ruin the product? I left it in the house overnight… haven’t looked at it this morning yet. Will it still be fine to use when it firms up again?
I’ve had my jar in the trailer and it has been there since June… so lots of melting and reforming and melting again. It’s fine.

I’m just bumping this back up to add.

I have been using Moss’ Vanilla saddle soap since forever. It was okay, but I wasn’t impressed. No matter what I did it never felt like my saddle was clean or conditioned. Since I was running low on Moss and this stuff is so well reviewed here, I thought I’d try it.

I LOVE IT! I have the citrus ginger, which at first was a bit of a different scent for me, but I like it. I might test out a different one next time, but I’m not sure yet since I’ve grown fond of the scent. My saddle, bridle, girth, boots (and also my mare’s cribbing collar) have never looked so healthy and thoroughly conditioned. Also, this stuff seems to remove a metric ton of dirt. I’ve never had so much luck removing dirt from my equipment - the sponge ends up blackened with dirt every time, which is new. My horses live in a virtual dustbowl. It’s hard to keep dirt off of my equipment, but this stuff does its job!

My girth in particular has really benefited from the conditioner. It was in pretty rough shape before - it seemed like no conditioner could reach it. I’m still working on it, but the conditioner has made great improvements already. I’m glad I made the investment  Also, I have highly recommended it to my horsey friends and my trainer.

And of course, the customer service gets an A++ too

Hello! My mom got me higher standards for my birthday and I’ve been using it on my existing tack- question: do you recommend using it on a brand spanking new saddle.

Just got my new smith worthington in and I’m terrified I’m going to ruin it with oil. Would the conditioner work well to help break in the saddle??

I think I’ve answered ThatBayHorse’s question in email, but just in case anyone else is curious, my lawyer self doesn’t allow me to issue guarantees for anything, but other than the possibility of a little darkening, I don’t know of anything that would make the conditioner contraindicated for a new saddle.

How’s that for a cautious, lawyer reviewed answer!

So glad everyone is happy with the products!

Hey… it’s almost ~the season~… Bensmom, do you have any special seasonal blends in the works? I finished both the Balm and Buzz’s Citrus Ginger and have been hanging on reordering because last year there were a few specialty ā€œflavorsā€ - I loved the Citrus but some of the rave reviews on the seasonal items makes me want to hold off another month… Should I wait?

We usually do our special Christmas season flavors but haven’t made any firm plans yet! I will have to get with the elves in the workshop and see what we come up with!

That’s what I’m waiting for too! I’m nearing the end of my tub of Vanilla Lavender, but really hoping for some Christmas scents this year! The little sampler packs would be lovely too, they would make great Christmas favors to get the rest of my barn buddies fully hooked! Everyone always asks me what I use on my tack since it not only looks and feels great, but the whole barn smells lovely every time I clean tack!

They aren’t ā€œspecial flavorsā€ (the Buzz’s Citrus and the Lavender/Vanilla) but Bensmom has generously donated a package of two soaps and a conditioner in their own bucket to cart it in to the ATA’s Silent Auction again this year… bids start at $5 (winners will have to pay for shipping) and the auction will go live again on line in about a week or so…
