Bensmom saddle soap - the review thread (if that's okay with Bensmom)

Jexa,

The tub does smell really pepperminty but I haven’t had any issues with my peppermint loving horses. I don’t leave the tack within reach though.

Good to know…

My dog went after a different leather conditioner that used cocoa butter (he can’t see or hear, but that nose can smell chocolate from a mile away!) and I even caught him licking my saddle a different time- so glad he didn’t bite!!

Geez, guys – no idea why the soap is getting going granular in the wilds of Canada!

I haven’t had that problem with it :frowning: So, I’m afraid I’ve got no ideas or suggestions :frowning:

Thanks for the info! Might need to play it safe and go with the sugar and spice.

My horse would consider on his back “within reach” when it comes to peppermint…

A friend of mine was experimenting with making her own lotion and gave me some peppermint lotion, which I made the mistake of putting on a few hours before I went to the barn. I was refilling the pasture water when I looked down and saw my horse licking my leg with a drugged out look on his face - ears droopy out to the side and eyes half closed. He then refused to get more than a foot from me at all times, sniffing my legs like a dog, and would’ve licked my skin right off if I’d let him. The peppermint shampoo episode was the worst though. He’s an addict.

Bensmom,

Any chance you will ever bring back the Viva Carlos? Smells like sugary lemon cake and is my absolute favorite.

I tried the other citrus scent, which I liked, but I LOVE this scent.

lachelle – we don’t have any plans to bring it back presently, but have you seen the HSLC Jeffers Lemonade scent? Just a hint – it is very close to the Viva Carlos one!

Just got my shipment last night… smells SO GOOD! This weekend will be a tack-cleaning-palooza!

Today I tried out my Lemonade scented soap and it did a great job on my horse’s grooming halter. Easily took off the gray grunge and left the leather feeling clean but not stripped. I may clean it more often if it really is a conditioning soap, as my things sometimes feel a bit tacky after using Effax or Passier Lederbalsam.

Someday I hope to have only one soap and one conditioner in my tack cleaning bag. But sometimes you need glycerine, or castile soap, lederbalsam or Leather Therapy. I’ll use them up and see what I need to replace. I think the Lemonade will stay.

I’ve finally exhausted my original tub of Lavender Vanilla[/QUOTE]

I am feeling sadness that I can now see the bottom of mine. I have to say, I’ve used about everything, and bensmom, I still LOVE it. I do follow it up with some Leather Therapy conditioner now that the air is dry (simply because I already had it & it also lasts foreeeever).

It has to have lasted over a year & there’s actually still quite a bit in there (I’m a “keep it functional & lasting” tack cleaner, so not every day). And mega-kudos to it for happily surviving all kinds of strange & crazy climactic conditions in my Rubbermaid tack shed!

I have five saddles and one horse. So I need to sell the three saddles that do not fit my horse. Two of which are leather and have had some bad housing over the last year and were in pretty bad looking shape. I spent four hours cleaning those two saddles along with stirrup leathers and breast collars and they all look and feel wonderful again. I’m definitely sticking with this stuff. When my new jumping saddle gets here I’m going to be using the soap often to maintain it.

There’s a lemonade scent?!? drool

Thanks bensmom! Didn’t know about the Lemonade scent…will definitely have to check that out!

Hey Bensmom…would you consider letting our Canadian retailers stock the Lemonade scent (or maybe create a snazzy new “Canadian-only” scent)? With the exchange rate so poor right now, I’m glad I stocked up at the beginning of your breakthrough into the market, but I really, really want to try the lemon! Can’t justify paying so much with exchange and shipping though :frowning:

ETA: I bet maple would smell really good…just sayin’

YASSSSSSS! I was speaking with one of the Canadian retailers recently, and they absolutely love the product as do all of their customers, but the shipping combined with the low exchange rate makes keeping lots on hand quite difficult for them, and purchasing individually directly adds up really fast too!

I’ve been meaning to try this product for ages and now have some on order. I can’t wait!

I am wondering if anyone has used it on fashion boots? I have a couple pairs of Frye boots that could use a good cleaning.

Twigster, I haven’t tried it on suede, but it works on all my smooth leather.

Awesome! Mine are not suede so I can’t wait.

Twigster. I’ve used it on shoes, boots, leather furniture, leather straps on baskets you name it I’ve used it. My mom has used it on the leather seats in her Mercedees. I’ve also passed it out to non horsey co workers to use on their leather goods. There have been ZERO complaints. ;). Just haven’t used on suede.

We’re in Canada. To buy one tub of soap = $17.99 US + shipping (Jeffers’ site won’t show a cost, must email but let’s guess $10 which is probably low) = $27.99 + craptastic exchange rate of 36% (yikes!) = $38.01 for one tub of soap.

Much as I like it, I’m not paying ~ $40 for one tub of saddle soap. :frowning: And that also doesn’t take into account whether we get dinged for GST or Customs at the border. Sigh.

What retailers sell it in Canada? I’ve been buying from the Etsy site so far, and only when there’s been a sale. I would lovvvveeee to try the lemonade scent though!
