Best ankle brace for rider for jumping?

Looking for a very supportive ankle brace that will fit under my riding boots for xc and stadium. Ankle has been broken 2x and have chronic tendonitis in it. So anyone have the same problem where they need a strong brace for jumping and have suggestions on where to buy one?

Well, yes and no…

I used to use one of those tan elastic ones from the local pharmacy. Worked ok, or perhaps it just made it feel “protected” still hurts like the devil.

If I was seriously eventing, I’d get a good sports ortho guy to show me how to wrap it up like they do for football players, boxers, etc, and go with that.

If you don’t have zippers in your boots, get them. My injury was twenty years ago, and though I work hard at it, I’ve lost some flexibility.

The only time my ankle doesn’t hurt is if I’m laying on the beach with my entire foot and ankle is buried in the warm sand and I don’t walk any farther than room to the beach for a couple of days.

Your ankle sounds just like mine!! The only time it doesn’t hurt is when I am on lots of pills and just laying there.

Tried the ones from the drug store, don’t really do much. Looking at going to Scheels and taking my riding boot, that does have zippers or else I wouldn’t even be able to get in them, with so that I can try to find one that will give great support and fit under the boot. Ah the joys of being a cripple

I broke the tibia and fibula in both legs (separate accidents). I’ve been using the Back on Track brace and really like it. I never ride without it. Fits pretty nicely under my boots.

I use this one

The tan ones don’t offer enough support for me, this one gives much more support, but isn’t too bulky to go under your boot.

Just make sure you get the first one I posted, and not this one: http://www.walmart.com/ip/ADJ-ANKLE-STABILIZER/10533462
because this one has metal bar things on the side, which make it impossible to bend your ankle (AKA keep your heel down)

With an ankle that’s broken more than once in the past, I would do some serious research before buying a brace. Best bet would be to head to a medical supplies store and see if someone can suggest a good one.

My doc put me in an Aso brace when I was finally released from a cast following ankle surgery: http://www.asoankle.com/

I was able to wear it with paddock boots, though i don’t think I could zip them up. Part of that was swelling. It’s an awesome brace though, especially for lateral support.

I’d get a good sports ortho guy to show me how to wrap it up like they do for football players,

Pretty hard to tape one’s own ankle . . . However, a good athletic trainer (you can find them at Universities with big sports programs) can tell you what’s available in the world of braces/wraps. Nothing much is going to fit well under a riding boot unless it’s a wimpy thing that in reality will provide almost no “support”. However, some people find that just having some sort of wrap is more comfortable.

I have a tru-fit that I got from Dick’s. It does a so-so job with my tendonitis but makes it a pain to get my (non-zipper) boots on and off. Most of the time I just try to tough it out and ride around in two-point trying to hold in the swear words. It’s almost more of a hassle to ride with it.

It’s not that hard to tape your own ankle

Hell, I’m 50, don’t event right now (foxhunt) and I can still do it.

I always was flexible. Not as much now.

A couple years ago I had an extremely bad bone bruise on the top of my Talus bone. Originally they had thought I chipped it, but MRI revealed only a bad bruise. I was told I needed to rest it (in a cast) or it would break. However, I’m the Chair for our local hunter pace series, do the course design and ride my horses in them. We had two left. So I asked if I babied it as much as possible if we could wait a couple weeks on the cast. The Doc agreed, and I used this:

http://www.amazon.com/Futuro-Sport-Deluxe-Stabilizer-Adjustable/dp/B0057D867O/ref=dp_cp_ob_hpc_title_0

It fit under my boots and offered a lot of support. I didn’t feel that it impeded my ability to put my heels down at all. It was less bulky but more supportive than the similar one that the orthopod gave me. I showed it to him and he said it was a good one.

I used this one riding last year after chipping my ankle:

http://www.donjoy.com/index.asp/fuseaction/products.detail/cat/7/id/176

It fit under paddock boots and is pretty comfortable. I don’t do high boots, so I don’t know about that. Flexibility is pretty good, no way you can roll it in this thing.

I’ve taped my ankle many times myself. I like vetwrap better than tape - I cut the roll in half before I use it. (electric knife w/ some oil on the blades works dandy)

Vet wrap

Yup. vet wrap. I flex my foot when wrapping not to tight, wrap and go. works best for me and fits under boot.

Ankle injuries not just restrict the playing of the sports but also the day to day ankle movements – for that Aircast ankle braces are said to be the best in providing optimum comfort and relief from the pain.

There are various patterns available in the ankle braces from this brand which serves different purposes of ankle injury hence this makes it easy to choose accordingly for your ankle sprain/injury.

Good luck. The only thing I could find to fit under my boot and provide enough support was a good ole Ace bandage.

I tore a tendon in my foot and ankle in HS playing basketball; have no support on outside of my right foot and it thus rolls over. I wrap my foot and ankle myself with vet wrap; it works great!

If you have a PT, ask them to show you how to use kinesio tape. A little different from traditional taping, less bulky, and you can do it yourself with some practice. Helped me immeasurably when riding after knee surgery (very difficult to find a knee brace with any decent support that won’t destroy a saddle).

Ancient thread bumped by spam

Oh man I didn’t even notice when I replied! Hopefully this will still be relevant and helpful to others …7 years later lol!
