Best Ant Killer

I recently purchased liquid ant baits by Terro for my home because the ants were taking over my kitchen. Within one week all the ants were dead and I haven’t seen one since then. This is the first time we haven’t had ants during the summer in years.

Our feed room and tack room have been taken over by ants as well. I placed one of the ant baits under a pallet with a container on top of it. Hopefully in a week we won’t be dealing with ants getting into our feed containers.

Instead of keeping this simple solution to myself, I thought I would pass this along because ants have always been a problem for a few barns that I know of

I also have had good luck using the Terro products.

thanks, I’ll look into their products

Do they have one for applying to ant hills in pastures/yards? Where are Terro porducts sold?

According to the garden guy on the radio, boiling water or water vinegar mix poured on to a well wetted ant hill.

We’ve had good luck with Borax/powdered sugar.

My mother used the boiling water technique, and it didn’t work well at all. The borax powder can be used under appliances, and that works on ants and roaches. My blown in extra insulation in the attic is coated with a borax mixture, and that is something bugs hate. In my previous house the blown in loose attic insulation was borax coated shredded paper, and I never saw a roach after that. b I also had insulation panels, and vinyl siding outside at the same time, so that might be a factor also.

I’m not too sure, but I haven’t looked either. The Terro ant bait I bought can be used both inside and outside. If the horses can be kept out of the pasture for the week, you could put the liquid ant bait in the field, as long as it doesn’t rain on it, blow it away, or tip it over. You don’t want the liquid to get in the grass for the horses to accidentally eat.

We bought a pack of 6 from amazon. Super cheap, less than $10, and I have only used 3 of them (2 for home, 1 for the barn).

Coincidentally - just said to my husband we have not seen any ants this year.
Our house is on a crawlspace but is older. Last time I saw ants I sprinkled liberal amounts of Borax around the edges of the room and door way and swept it under the floor trim - gone! Did not think about the sugar additions, but maybe that would attract 'em?

Use some of the rest of the box in your laundry to whiten dull whites.

Yep - the sugar attracts them and apparently the grain is similar to borax when it’s mixed together.

Boiling water/vinegar/pickyourwives’tale does nothing but perhaps kill a few members of a colony.

Terro is a great product, however I believe it is only meant for the black/sugar ants, sadly not fire ants, if you are looking for that. I have to go buy some, usually the cheapie ant traps work well for me in the kitchen, but these little buggars are not falling for it. I don’t mind one or two, but if you bring the family in, I get really aggravated.

thanks

just hoping something out there would work for the fire ants

Amdro is my go-to for fire ants.

For ants on a hard surface like your kitchen counter, boiling water kills them instantly.

This video shows why the hot water and vinegar treatment really doesn’t do anything. He pours molten aluminum into an ant hill to show the size of the colony. Ant hills/colonies are vast! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQnd9hmJye0

Amdro. Only thing that works around here for the fire ants, unless you hire someone to come in and treat. I have no idea what they use…

You pour boiling water on your kitchen counter? Just curious, in my house, this would be a huge mess (not that you could distinguish it from the rest of the mess, LOL). I just, er, squish them with my finger. I guess I’m low tech.

I use this to kill ants with. It’s expensive but doesn’t harm the environment and works on all types of ants and other insects too.

Boiling water kills ants instantly but doesn’t use boiling water to kill them. there was hundreds of pest available which help ants away far from your house or kitchen. Like buildingand pest inspection Sydney it is the most effective pest for ants and small insecticides.

Any kind of powder will keep ants away because it covers them, so borax, baby powder, diatamaceous earth, cinnamon, etc. etc. I would find a powder cheap and easy to you that won’t harm anything else and spread it liberally. You won’t see ants again.

This is an ancient thread, but the answer remains: If you don’t kill the queen, the fire ants reestablish the colony. Amdro kills the queen as the workers feed it to her. She is buried very deep in the mound - hot water, etc etc etc don’t reach er.
