Best anti-fungal or crud buster shampoo?

My mare re-injured her hind leg, and had to spend two hot and humid weeks with her leg wrapped. Leg is now healed, but her skin has developed a fungal (I am assuming fungal) crud around the injury and down the front of her cannon bone. Scrubbing with regular shampoo and exposure to sunlight and air don’t seem to be helping. Any suggestion on what to use to get rid of the yuck fast?

Is it cannon keratosis? Right spot, and the description fits. Benzoyl peroxide wash is supposed to be great for that…

Well, I googled that and it doesn’t quite fit. Its got a yellow-ish hue to it, almost like its just a smearing of the Derma-gel I was using on the wound, except that I never put it on the front of her leg, and it doesn’t want to wash off.

I’d start with athlete’s foot cream/spray. If you have to shampoo, ketoconazole shampoo. If those don’t work, you might need something from the vet with a steroid.

Chlorhexidine shampoo would be my go to for a wash.

After not much success with chlorhexidine, I’m having great success for different skin scurfs (one had yellowish hue) with this $7.39 Synergylabs Medicated Shampoo. It contains Coal Tar, Salicylic Acid & Micronized Sulfur, same ingredients recommended for people with dandruff caused by bacterial or fungal infections. I’ve seen hair starting to grow back after just one use. I apply shampoo, then use a comb to remove the scurf to the root.

Day or so after application, you might see some layers flaking off. Don’t be alarmed. It’s just clearing out the bad stuff.

This article talks human dandruff caused by bacterial and fungal infections and the recommended shampoos, such as Neutrogena T-gel, Nizoral, Selsun Blue, and why they work. Key ingredients: coal tar, salicylic acid, sulfur, ketoconazole and selenium sulfide.

I had some hind leg crud that became visible one spring after shedding, and it cleared up with two washes of Head and Shoulders shampoo and then Desitin diaper cream zinc oxide.

Barn is in the suburbs closer to the mall than any tack store so I often end up looking for solutions in the human pharmacy!

Mega Tek shampoo or something with Tea Tree oil in it would be my go-to.

I use this stuff and it works great for clearing up random skin things.

Just lather with Equiderma lotion and leave it there.

I use MalAcetic shampoo and sometimes plain old Dawn Dish Soap and warm water does the trick on the legs.

Good luck and be sure to pat legs as dry as possible, whichever of our suggested elixirs you use:)

I use a Nolvasan (chlorhexadine) shampoo, then Fungasol. I have tried a lot of things and this is my favorite easily available one (I hear good things about Equiderma).

I had a ketoconazole/chlorhexadine shampoo I used on Yos leg when he had cellulitis, worked very well, smelled nice.
