Best barn for adult re-rider in Austin, TX

Hey all, I’m going down in March to visit my friend who has relocated to Austin. She wants to check out some barns when I’m there.

She was a h/j barn rat in a competitive barn as a kid, but hasn’t ridden in a long time. I don’t think she is interested in spending that kind of money or time on horses at this point in her life, but is looking for a barn to get back into riding and maybe pop over some jumps again eventually. She also doesn’t have her own horse, so would need access to a lesson horse.

Are their any adult-friendly barns you can suggest?

TIA!

There are lots of options in Austin! Whereabouts is your friends location? Unfortunately, with traffic in Austin so terrible these days, it’s best to try and stay on one side of town.

I will find out and report back…

It’s so rider specific and what their goals are, where they’re located, how long of a commute they’re interested in.

First one that comes to mind is Scattered Oaks Farm. I rode there for a majority of my life, great adult group, laid back, fun attitude, not overly expensive, and a trainer that works with all levels and budgets.

Fairly accessible from almost anywhere in Austin, given the new toll road and the east location.

She lives right off of 45 between Cedar Park and Round Rock. So it looks north to me…hope that helps.

Will check out the links too–thanks!!

Scattered oaks was a good place for the horse less, lessons were not segregated between boarders and non-boarders. IIRC, lessons were pretty cheap. However, I was not terribly impressed with the quality of instruction. Very far east of town.

Another one in that area is white fences. They do both hunters and dressage. Very nice people and better lessons than scattered oaks, not sure about their lesson horses.

Rio Vista farm is a big place close to the airport. Competitive h/j show barn with a very strong willed trainer some people don’t get along with. Boarder lessons are ok, if you don’t board or lease the lessons are terrible, very limited instruction and you can’t do much.

I quite liked lessoning with Jen from cornerstone farm. She’s in spicewood/Westlake and treated horse less me just as well as her boarders. Also allowed me to trade barn work for extra riding time.

Madrone ranch stables has awesome trainers, but I don’t know about the quality and quantity of lesson horses. They are out towards bee cave/lake Travis, i.e. west.

Stay away from Heather Davis (can’t remember her barn name). After every lesson I took, she harass me and tell me I owed x amount for leasing a horse even though I specifically said I wasn’t interested in a lease.

Bee caves riding center, hunters Chase farm, and bel canto: scary scary places for the horse and non existent instruction in lessons.

Switch willo is geared exclusively towards showing. If you don’t lease a horse you can’t jump higher than two foot. If you do lease or own, you are charged a fee for every month that you don’t show.

There’s also manor equestrian center, Cameron equestrian, bit by bit, couraggio, the reserve at lake Travis, and another of other barns, but I have no first-hand knowledge of them.

Can you tell I spent a long time horseless in Austin?

Awesome! Thank you.

Jen is now in Burnet, Heather Davis is at that barn now.

Interesting… When did she move out there?

A few months ago, it’s a beautiful place based on pictures.

What exactly is wrong with Bel Canto? I’ve looked at boarding my horse there. The communication seems great. A few things I don’t love in the contract, but that is just me. It seems nice enough based on pictures. I have not done a barn visit.

I’ve heard from a few people to stay away… but the website/owner makes it seem so nice.

You can PM me if you would rather! I don’t have to move from my current barn. I really love the place, but if my work hours continue to spike, then I might have to move out of self care and into full.

Belmont, just sent you a PM.

OP, knowing where your friend lives, Switch Willo is probably the most convenient option. They have a big lesson program and lots of adult riders to socialize with. Beverly is my favorite instructor there, but I think they have some new ones that I don’t know.

I did a camp with Jen YEARS ago when I was in middle school. It was one of the best camps I went to!

If your friend is near I45 and doesn’t mind paying tolls, the commute to barns such as Scattered Oaks, Manor Equestrian and Cameron Equestrian are VERY reasonable. My mom lives near your friend and my dad near these barns, so I’m on that road often. It’s a life saver!!

That being said, I’ve ridden, in years past at Manor with Daniel Bedoya Sr. It was great. I was younger and I noticed that there were lots of mature adults at the barn. Daniel was a great teacher. If I still lived in the area I would not hesitate to ride in his program.

I rode once at Cameron. Not good. The owner, Marlita was very rude to me during a camp. In fact, her camp was more like a labor camp. There were many lessons in “Tack Cleaning”. Many folks from Manor did not speak highly of her, either. (These facilities are next door to each other; separated by a pond). Their outdoor paddocks are giant mud pits.

I agree with the suggestion to ride with Beverly at Switch Willo. She is a great instructor, even when the ring is full she manages to give everyone individualized attention. She sets up exercises that make you think, not the usual drill over courses. I came to every lesson excited and ready to work. She sometimes lets riders hack an extra horse too. Switch Willo has a very convenient location, also near lots of shopping if you need to run errands after riding. Coming south from where she lives, I don’t think she would run into much traffic getting there. The barns in Manor wouldn’t be terribly far either so I think she’ll have lots of options to choose from!

Marleta died just over a year ago (I think). Kersten has taken full ownership of the business and has created a new barn name, Esoteric.

I’ve said this before on here and have been contradicted, but I do not believe Daniel Sr. at Manor has lesson horses.

Oh wow, I had no idea. I don’t live in Austin anymore, but I do visit a few times a month to see my parents and I drive by regularly and haven’t noticed any new signage put up.

I just checked the website and it looks great! I was always envious of that nice indoor arena they had. I have no experience with Kersten, but it now looks like it may be a great program for the OP to check out.

Daniel Sr. had a lesson horse for me, about 3-4 years ago. But that may have since changed.

Also, because you seem familiar with the Austin area, have you been to the Charlotte’s Saddlery off of 183 in the Lakeline area? I’ve driven by it, but haven’t had the chance to go in.

edit: this was supposed to be a reply to Nickelodian Sorry

There’s a Charlotte’s in Austin?!

I HAVE been gone too long.

It actually just recently opened up, maybe right before Christmas. I haven’t been in yet, as I am so slammed at work, but I’m not far, so need to stop by.

This thread is great. I wish I was looking for myself. sigh

I think I’m finally ready to start riding again here in Austin, glad this thread is up with some new places to consider!
