Best barn lights that don't need electric?

My run-in shed has a tack/feed room that I keep tack/feed in (sorry… dumb comment!). There’s no electric all the way out in the field so I have a solar flood light but I was wondering what would be good for inside of the feed room. It’s hard to hold a flash light and scoop feed at the same time!

Thanks!

My friend has one of these - Coleman® Classic XPS LED Lantern

Nice and bright, batteries last forever. If you hang a hook from the ceiling, you can just hang the lantern up and scoop feed or whatever you need to do.

I have some of those adhesive backed battery LED puck lights in my trailer tack room. It’s not very bright, but would be enough to scoop out food if you have a few of them.

I use the magnetic LED lights for my trailer for tacking up in the dark but have a stick on in the shed. If you pay attention to lumens put out, there are some good bright ones out there and they don’t go through a ton of batteries. Tip: mount several at different angles, directly overhead is annoying shadow.

This is a little different answer, but if you (or a friend) can do basic carpentry, you could look for window(s) at a salvage place and install in your tack/feedroom to let natural daylight in, as long as you have a place to put it that’s inaccessible to the horses. We didn’t have electricity in the beginning so we put 2 sidelight windows (don’t open, measure about 12"x36") up high on a wall near the roof line. They work great.

I have a cheaper version of that Coleman lantern - bought for around $10 @ Target. Runs on 4 D batteries that so far have lasted for almost 4 years.
I got it for the DR in my trailer, but have used it when the power went out in my house. It provides good light - enough to read by.

Also 2nd the idea of adding a window.
I got a small one for my henhouse - converted metal shed - and for under $30 I have a source of light & ventilation.
The window I got was labeled “basement” and has a screen & storm option.
From my experience with the screened windows in my barn I also recommend installing waaaaaay out of horsy reach.

You could also get one of those camping headlight thingys.
But that is just one more thing to remember to put on…unless you leave it in the feedroom?

Ooo, yes, always have my headlight on in winter, love the hands free and can even wear it with a hat/ballcap.

I have one of these in my feed room. Motion-detected or remote controlled. It takes 3 D batteries, which last through Winter. Gives off a ton of light.

I’ve bought, but haven’t installed yet, this solar-powered motion detector light. . That will be for the barn.

Love Mr. Beams- using one in the hay loft and another in the feed room for several years. Only problem is when the temperatures drop into the single digits the lights get a little dim. The base can be a little tricky to install as well.

I have 5 or 6 of the Mr Beams lites around the yard. They are great!Perfect for those dark spots this time of year.

If you’re mainly having trouble juggling a flashlight while sorting out feed, then a head lamp is the answer. It automatically points wherever you look.

I’ve got two of those little puck lights in my tack room (8x12) and 3 in the barn aisle (12x24) - they do a remarkably decent job. Enough light in the aisle to work by, and I think I could read in the tackroom if I wanted to. Mine were part of a set of six that comes with a remote control, which I put up just inside the tackroom door, so I push one button, and all the lights come on! The only problem is that when the weather gets cold, the batteries don’t last very long.

There’s also my totally ghetto, but surprisingly effective, and wonderfully inexpensive Maglite stuck in a roll of paper towels in a bucket or canister… shine it straight up at the ceiling and you can get a remarkable amount of light bounced back. A pair of those served me faithfully my first winter in the barn, and I keep one around as backup still.

That looks amazing!

I have two of these in my outdoor horse shelters. http://www.wayfair.com/GamaSonic-Light-My-Shed-3-48-Light-LED-Solar-Shed-Light-GS-16LD-L6112-K~GAO1103.html?refid=GX26601792300-GAO1103&device=c&gclid=CIHHoe_6qroCFW1yQgodjDwAlA

This is the third light set-up we’ve had out there and by far the brightest. They light up every corner of the stalls. I haven’t had them up long enough to test through a winter but so far I am in love with them.
