Best boarding barns in Bryan/College Station TX

I’ve been relocated to Bryan/College Station for work and am looking at bringing my horse down from Dallas.

Can anyone suggest GREAT boarding barns?

Must have a lit area to ride and good turn out, quality feed and care. Onsite trainer would be great, but not mandatory. Covered arena would also be great, but not mandatory.

Somewhere you would leave your horse at, because us Cothers are picky!

I rode there last year (as a freshman with more time than I have now) and didn’t board, so I can’t say specifics on much. Great turnout, covered ring, sand ring, grass field with jumps, and Alex is a very good trainer.

My friend kept her horse here for several years and she loved it. The people were always very nice when I went out to ride her horse, but there’s no onsite trainer. They do have a covered ring, sand ring, and a dressage ring which was fun

I will say that I took a lesson with Christian before deciding on a place to ride (I ride a lot at home for other people but don’t have my own horse, so I was mainly looking for lessons/possibility of riding more once they got to know me) and didn’t get much out of it. Also wasn’t impressed by the facilities, but I know she was in the middle of upgrading so I’m not sure if she’s finished it recently.

I know Christian well, I’m sure she’ll call you back in a timely manner. That would be the only barn I’d recommend in BCS.

Although it’s technically an “eventer” barn, I’ve moved several friends’ horses to this place and they love it. Big bonus - a vet owns the place and has her practice on-site.

FWIW - a friend who moved back to Dallas from there is competing her horse in the Derbies, so a little cross-training isn’t bad!

I second Sundown. I kept my mare there while I was trying to sell her. Lovely people, lovely barn, and the care was top notch. I have nothing to complain about and I’m pretty sure Mare didn’t either.

DO NOT board at Sundown Farm. Alex is no longer associated with the facility and her mother, Peggy, is in charge of everything. It’s a shame because it was a nice barn but things have gone downhill. People are trying to get out as fast as possible. PM me for specifics, but I would suggest looking into another facility.

I love Leaning Oaks, would never be worried about leaving my horse there, but I have to have somewhere to ride after work. With the time change it’s now pitch black at 6! I didn’t see any lights out there but maybe I missed them? Anyone know?

I lived in this area for close to 30 years…the only place I would even contemplate boarding my horse is Horse Haven. I still have my farm in College Station, I never had to board mine.

And I know Leaning Oaks well. (forgot about Janet’s place) I know Janet, the owner, and one of my dearest friends, rides there every morning. I would imagine there are lights. Lovely turnout and stables are nice and airy, very conducive to the Texas heat which is in existence 9 months a year.

So much FALSE information. Let’s set the record straight. Philadelphia boarded at SDF and was told to leave; that the management felt she would be happier else where. It was later that evening that she posted the previous post. You know the old saying about ‘Bad Apples’ and now she has turned into “Sour Grapes”! Alex is teaching and training at SDF in the evenings and on weekends. The barn has always been run by Peggy and holds a very high standard of care for each horse and rider. SDF is a great facility with very nice girls boarding there. They get rid of the bad ones!

Took some hunting, but found that the link referenced in this thread sundownequine.com does not exist. The farm site url is

The trainer currently listed is Colleen O’Reilly, stating her specialty as dressage, also ability with hunter/jumper. She’s working on an advanced degree at TAMU, according to the site. Anyone know about her?

Steep Hollow Farm - more references, opinions, for/against?

How about Topsider? Michelle Voorhees has clearly been a force in Texas dressage. Comments on the barn and instruction?

Horse Haven seems nice, but the turnout seems to be just small pens with packed dirt. Looks as if the others have more/better turn-out?

I currently board at Topsider. Michelle is a wonderful trainer, I look forward to every single lesson. She has a wonderful way of explaining things in different ways so that I really understand. The barn is not the fanciest, but is extremely safe and the manager monitors every single detail of the horses care. If you want to take dressage lessons, I definitely recommend Topsider. There are a few jumps in a grass field if you like to jump as well.

PM me for info about Sundown. I boarded there for several years, and can say that the facility is beautiful and very well kept.

I haven’t heard anything bad about Steep Hollow, I know several people that board there and love it.

I also know someone who boarded at Horse Haven, and she really liked it. The owners were very friendly when I inquired about boarding there.
