Or is there one? I see some good comments here and wonder if their wisdom has been collected anywhere…
Thanks

Are you looking for breed-specific type books with info on bloodlines & such? Or are you looking for “how-to” books on Insemination, Stallion Management, Foaling Protocol, etc.?
On the latter, my “bible” is Karen Hayes DVM “The Complete Book of Foaling.” Another good one is “Blessed Are the Broodmares,” and “Blessed Are the Foals.”
I don’t think there is a “Blessed Are the Stallions”…maybe there is one called “Stallions are a PITA, But You Gotta Have 'Em…”
But there ARE books on stallion management, collection techniques, etc.

There is a book called “The Stallion” and the author makes no bones about how . . . challenging they are. It was great reading! Cured me quite completely of wanting to have a stallion around.
The above books are great, but I am a book lover and will happily read just about any book on a subject, provided the author has decent credentials. Why settle for just one? With Abebooks, Amazon and your local library you can read a round dozen and choose your favorite one to actually buy a new copy.
ETA I also like “Veterinary Guide to Horse Breeding”.
I have that one!! He told some pretty hairy stories in that one didn’t he? I still remember the one about that nasty, “killer” stallion he first handled when he was young…where that horse looked him dead in the eye when the author came to get him and the look said, “mess with me, and I will kill you. You behave & so will I.” And the author believed him and handled the stallion w/great care & respect. He knew who would be the last one standing if they got in a brawl…and it wouldn’t be him!
Stallions ARE different (breeding stallions anyway…); there was an interesting article in this month’s DT on “Gender Training.”
Thanks for the suggestions. This is not for standing stallions, but handling breeding of mares and the care of resulting foals. Wondered if there may be a new book rather than the Blesseds, which I have the one for foals already. I haven’t been keeping up on the writings so didn’t know if there was a new beloved text.

That is my favorite quick reference guide for foals that I keep at home in my library. He was a professor of mine so maybe I am partial to him:)
And then of course there is Voss’s Equine Reproduction book if you really want to learn the ins and outs
That sounds like it could be far too technical for me Don’t wanna be a vet LOL
Hayes’ book was my bible, along with Theresa Jones book:

I also have Voss, but it is probably too technical for many.
Not trying to derail the topic… These books all sound great! I’ll have to invest in some
Kyzteke, you mentioned a books on bloodlines and such? I’d be interested in looking at some of those, any recommendations? Thanks!
My vet is Dr Juan Samper - he wrote a book called Equine Breeding Management and Artificial Insemination. It is up to date (2012 I think) and I just checked, there are used ones on Amazon.com.
While he was writing it he said he wanted to publish a book like Blessed are the Broodmares, but more in depth.
I think I got rid of my old copy of Blessed are the Broodmares as it was dated and an old edition - and I actually found it quite a depressing read.
Juan is world renowned - he is Totilas’s repro vet!
and which a friend of mine rather accurately described as “Stephen King for Mare Owners”
I’ll second Theresa Jones’ Complete Foaling Manual. Have read, re-read and kept it by my side through several foalings.

I HEARD that. Which was why I did NOT read it! (Enough to worry about just reading the threads on this Forum!)
That website and list from Equine Reproduction should be on the list of most useful thread.
What book do you recommend for the small time, not too technical breeder?

Which breed? Name the breed and there are books which basically just consist of Who Begat Who, but they usually also tell you what accomplishments Who & Who achieved.
These books are for people who are truly serious breeders who want to know their horse’s pedigree inside and out.
