Best books for training/exercises

Hi all! I was wondering if I could get some recommendations for training books that come with exercises. I have a green boy that I’ve done a lot of the training with (1.5 months of professional to get him started, plus me riding him under his trainer for half a month) and now around 4 months of me training mostly solo. This is my first project and we’re learning together! He’s coming along beautifully, but I’ve found myself stuck in the “20 meter circle rut” and I can feel us both getting bored

I was looking to get a book filled with exercises that can challenge his brain and his body, but that are targeted to a greener, less finished horse.

I’d also be very happy to hear websites, videos, audiobooks etc. that you all love for training ideas and exercises!

I recently started Ingrid Klimke’s Young horse training book. Really enjoying it as it provides a sense of time frames and progression of training (plus adorable instructions to feed lots of carrots!) 🥕

I like Jane Savoie’s Dressage 101 book as well. Nice reminder on basics to make sure me and the horse are doing the exercise correctly.

Ingrid also has a cavaletti book if you want additional exercises. It should come packaged with a tape measurer.

I like Build A Better Athlete. Each exercise builds on the former one. All encourage suppleness and communication. Very important basics.

I used 101 Dressage Exercises and simplified it to baby green level. Obviously not the advanced lateral work, but for example take the needlepoint exercise. It’s circle at C, go down the long side to B/E, do a half 10m circle to X and come back along the diagonal to H/M changing the rein, and repeat a bunch of times. Baby green version uses 20m circles, the whole long side (or 40m in a big ring) with a half 20m circle at the A end to come across the long diagonal, and repeat. As baby green improves in balance the half circle to diagonal return shrinks. The circle at C can shrink too. You’ll also see a greater difference between the corners and the 20m circle at the C end.

What discipline do you ride? I love Jim Wofford’s books with great jumping gymnastics.

wehorse (videos with Ingrid Klimke, Uta Gräf, Jessica von Bredow Werndl, Anja Beran, Alizée Froment …). As far as I know they offer voiceover in English now.
