Best breeches for apple shaped riders

Hi ladies, I’m on a mission to find some full seat breeches that will be the most flattering for my apple shape (waist 32, hips 38…belly in between 40 :frowning: ). I ALWAYS have to wear a belt or my breeches fall down constantly, then I’m in the very slippery muffin top slope .
What is popular and working for you similar shaped ladies?

So far my best go to are the piper knit original rise, as I found that they go up a titch higher than regular pipers. I tried a pair of the piper knit high rise, but all my fat just pokes out below the waist band (not pretty).

Do these “new” styles (sarafinas and horze styles) with the extra wide waste band help to hold the pudge in? Im going shopping this weekend, but wanted a heads up on brands that the local store might not carry.

Thanks a ton in advance

I’ve been using Irideon Cadence Classics for years. My hips and waist are fairly close. i have a disability with my right arm and have to leave zippers up when I put pants on . If they fit over my hips they will fit my waist. The fabric is very stretchy and the waistband has enough stretch to pull over my hips. The 'Cadence Classics" are the original design. The newer design “Cadence” have the light weight sock-style lower leg to go under tall boots. They come in regular and plus sizes, and they are close to regular pant sizes. I get emails from Adams Horse Supplies to keep an eye out for sales. If they don’t have something in stock she will order it and it is drop shipped to you from the distributor.

I just tried a pair of Ovation Slim Secret breeches and I really liked them. After having a baby and a c-section, everything went downhill (literally, lol). I did have to size up though.

Try the Dover Wellesley!!! I too am an apple shaped gal, and just recently found this style. They come in either a full seat or a euro-seat. Great colors, too. And…the sizing. Oh, wow. YAY!
I stumbled across these breeches in the Dover catalog, then read the few on-line reviews I could find.
Reviewers were happy with the quality, the material, and everyone noted that the sizing was TOO generous, and advised purchasers to order 2 sizes down.
So I did. They fit beautifully. Yes, I still will need to wear a belt, but hey, that’s why they are sold with belt loops, right? The waist fits where the waist SHOULD fit in an adult. The material is really great, the finishing (seams, closures) great.
PLUS: they are on sale right now (in limited colors)!!! I am delighted to have found breeches that fit my “pickle barrel” body type, that are attractive, and don’t break the bank.
These are so much nicer than the Pipers. I have a pair of Ovation Slim Secrets that I purchased and have yet to actually wear. They just don’t fit right, but they were better than nothing. Those are going on Facebook to be sold. I’ve never tried the Pipers because there have been so many negative comments about them on line.

I’m a narrow-hipped apple gal as well. I have never found a pair of ovation breeches that fit at all. Just plain does not work for me.

I LOVE Romfh Sarafinas, but they are a tad pricey for a schooling breech unless on sale.
Pipers - I am cooling on the whole piper line. They fit well, but just don’t hold up to a ton of use and are a bit too heavy for hot summer riding. But if I had to get pipers, I like the mid-rise or the classic (full seats) and use them in the winter & fall. I don’t care for their knit breech or any of their tights. I like the Hadley very much, and the Dover Wellesley. Honestly try the Smartpak Hadley. SP has a great return policy if you find that you don’t like them.

Hi ladies!! Thanks for all of the suggestions!! Just to update, I tried on the ROMFH sarafinas and champions today that I ordered from smart pak. I honestly feel like the sarafinas fit me the same as pipers, not great/not bad, but for an extra $100; I sent them back. The champions were AWESOME!! Just a titch too small in the waist (30L); I felt a bit paranoid that the 32s would be a bit too big, so I sent them back too (I live in Canada, so I have to drive to the border to pick up my free US shipping parcels). I will try to find some 32L champions in the city tomorrow and if they work, I will order them in a second! Will let you know if I find anything else you guys suggested or what works for me that you could try. I’m kinda stoked about these high rise breeches with the wide waistband now!! There is hope!!

Hi again ladies, so my update of today isn’t very exciting. I tried on a TON of breeches; there weren’t any that you had mentioned carried by the stores that we went to :(, but my favourites by far were horseware tights and horze danielas. Please keep in mind that there were only like 3 high rise breeches I came across all day. For the price (which was the same for all 3) I just went ahead and ordered the 32L ROMFH champions as I tried on a bunch of 32Ls, and they fit better than the 30Ls I’ve been wearing my entire adult life, so now I am trying to come to terms with my girth size expansion (sigh). Anyway, if you are interested, the champions are on sale right now at a bunch of places, but I found that Lexington horse has the best colour selection (I’ve never bought anything from them before so fingers crossed). If you find anything else good in the future, please keep me updated!! Thanks again for all of your insights!!

Pleasant Ridge carries a few Romfh styles and has free shipping in Canada - have a look there.

Not personally apple-shaped (I have my own breeches-based struggles ) but a few gals at my barn with this body shape really like the FITS breeches. They all look great in them and the fit seems to work well!

So am I understanding you went to stores, tried on a bunch of breeches in them, then went home and ordered from on-line shops without buying anything from the brick and mortar stores?

If so, not cool, OP, not cool. Though I’m happy you found “your” breeches. ‘Mine’ are Struck and Pikeur- I love them!!!

If I misunderstand, I do apologize for incorrectly taking you to task

yup, no worries. i went to see what they had and there were a few that i liked, but not enough to buy them and they were priced similar to the Champions onlilne (nowhere i went had any ROMFH products), so i ordered the ROMFHs online. i basically wanted to try things on to see if:

  1. i was now a 32L instead of a 30L and
  2. if the high waisted breeches would work for me.

If any of the places i went had ROMFH champions i would have bought them, but they didn’t and the high wasted ones i tried on were all silicone grip, which i don’t like.

Hope that makes it clearer

Have you tried kerritts? And Buckwild fits nicely, they have a “curvey mare” line… and REALLY COOL silicon prints ont he seats!! https://www.buckwildbreeches.com/

i tried some kerrits crossovers and they fit really weird in the crotch…I’m gonna leave it at that :o. i have a pair of Kerrits tights that are ok. I haven’t tried buckwild, but i looked on the website, and none of their styles had wide waistbands, which is now a requirement of any new breeches i buy. The 32L ROMFH champions are amazing!! Anyone who is apple shaped NEEDS to try these breeches!! I don’t even need to wear a belt!!! I have NEVER had a pair of breeches that didn’t fall down constantly even with a belt, so i am a super fan of the champions!! I pretty wont buy anything else now.

Tropical Rider makes breeches in custom sizes and styles. I am hard to fit, and am happy with my new breeches.
