My mare is a wonderful little thing, she is good on regumate but has been off for a bit bc of some issues. She is a little " motivated" as of late, and to keep her sound I need to keep her somewhat so she doesn’t hurt herself acting the fool. Any good supplements recommended? Thank you in advance!!!
I have a friend that has used CBD and it works but I’m pretty sure it’s NOT usef legal (they no longer use it because they show), but if you’re not showing I’ve heard it works well
I had tried almost all of the legal supplements with a particularly hot horse I used to own. Nothing worked (including Calm Cookies CBD) and I didn’t want to use Rx options. A steady work regime (in hand and undersaddle), removing grain and feeding more hay did help me manage him better. However, if your horse isn’t competing and needs to stay calm recovering from an injury, I’d talk to your vet about pharma options.
Would help to know her current diet and exercise schedule in addition to whether you are showing or not. Technically, any calming supplements violate the spirit of the rule with USEF.
Smart calm ultra really helped my TB. I started with a full dose it took about 3 weeks to kick in. After a few months I was able to wean him down to half a dose and he’s keeping his steady calm attitude. He is ridden regularly 5ish days a week
In the winter, we have had good experiences using Via Calm for our horses that get a bit fresh. I don’t show any of our horses on the supplement but I believe it’s ok to use for showing as well (best to double check on that though).
I would see if your vet would give you some reserpine for her. Know the details if you are planning on returning to showing because it takes a long time to leave the system.
Another vote for Animed Via Calm. We had a horse that had a traumatic farrier experience before coming to our farm and was almost uncontrollable when his back feet were trimmed. We used this to settle him before the farrier arrived, and it worked wonders. He did well, and no one got hurt!
We’ve used a combo of Quiessence, Smart Calm ultra pellets, and Total calm and focus on a nervous competition horse, works well for him.
You could look into the equine elixirs supplements. Positude helped out our mare when she was on stall rest.
Transitioning from Reserpine for a long term layup/rehab. Via Calm has been great. Very cheap and effective. Note, I don’t think you can show on this: tryptophan is a primary ingredient.
Tryptophan is legal as it is a naturally occurring amino acid. Valerian root is usually the illegal component of some calming supplements. Quick glance at Via Calm shows nothing illegal as it contains L-tryptophan, magnesium, thiamin, and calcium; though none of which are of significant proportions.
CYA, check the rules/call to verify.
Thanks! I don’t show, so it’s not an issue for me.
I think the Equine Elixers are a complete waste of money. I have asked for the science behind Ulcer Eraser from the owner on Facebook before and she could not tell me. She did say it was going to be on their updated website but that never happened. It is well marketed but has no substance- a pure money maker for EE and waste of money/probably not good for horses. I wish supplements were regulated.
They are lightly regulated - depending on what state you are in. Some companies do follow regulations…but most do not
