Best Cat Fur? Justify your answer.

You heard me: Weigh in with conviction on the best kind of Cat Fur.

I’m partial to a short, thick coat. Here’s my criterion: If I toddler could grab a nice fist full of skin/fur (so as to enjoy the cat) AND the fur was short enough that the cat could easily escape. If the cat’s coat passes that test, it’s good for all other kinds of petting, too.

My personal favorite is the kind of coat worn by the late, great HRH Rosalind. Very thick and plush. Not long but thick and plush. Think a high-quality, brand-new stuffed toy. I just loved the feel of it petting her. And unlike stuffed toys, she never in her life got beaten down or “tired” in the fur.

Persian fur. Granted, it takes quite a bit of maintenance. But it is just SO gorgeous. My two persian guys visit the groomer every 3 months - more often, in fact, than I see my hairdresser. Weekly brushing in between. One is quite the gentleman about it. Grooming the other requires leather gloves and a bit of fortitude. Interestingly, his groomer does not have this problem.

I just got some very fancy spray conditioner from the groomer to help keep mats down.

There isn’t a cat coat that I don’t like, though one that matted too easily would be a pain for sure. However, there is one of mine that has the coolest coat. He’s probably classified as a long hair, it’s pretty fine and light as air. His tail is so fluffy that I call it his feather duster. Here is my Toby: https://flic.kr/p/gDK2m5

I agree - a short, thick, luxurious, silky, shiny coat.

Your cat’s fur looks exactly like my Ziggy’s! Same color, too. The other cat is a shorthair, it reminds me of rabbit fur. I prefer the shorthair cat because the fluffy one gets matted.

I have one just like this! Feather duster tail and all! His hair is like cotton, but long and thick. He enjoys gently sweeping his bushy tail across my face as I sleep at 3am.

Ragdoll… Super thick double coat, longhair. Like petting a cashmere sweater that bites

Have to say the winter coat on my youngest sphynx. He feels like petting a hot Georgia peach…very velvety smooth.

No hair is the best hair!

Meezer… my Siamese’s coat is so soft and sleek and “close”, if you know what I mean. Yet it’s still incredibly soft and silky and just glides under my hand when I pet him.

Kim

Meezer.

Love the fur on one of my bengals. It’s like a pelt-thick and soft.

Short and fluffy. My Jeckelpuss has the perfect fur:

I hate, hate, hate long hair cats. They gross me out.

Lark had the best coat ever. Although his sister’s was pretty much the same. Now the new cat, christened ‘Dickens’ after the late great Little Jimmie has a short coat, so soft, I have never seen or felt anything like it!
Oh and Lark and Muff although long haired, never got matted! And Gatsby, also long haired, doesn’t seem to mat. My mom’s late cat Mouse, had long thich hair, and was CONSTANTLY matted.

Tortoiseshell fur that thickens up in the wintertime.

Tabby calico fur that is silky soft.

Brown tabby fur that keeps a 16yo warm year round and has a lovely tipped effect like a chinchilla cat’s fur.

All shorthairs – the best!

I had an alley cat turned house cat that looked like a Russian Blue. His fur was like a mink coat. Next to that between short and medium length and shiny is the best. Well, ok, maybe the best is my medium hair who doesn’t really shed except twice a year in clumps that are easy to pick up. He feels a bit like lambs wool that’s been wet and dried too fast though. Oh well. All cat hair is pretty good when it’s attached to a nice amiable cat.

I agree on the Persian fur! Plus it comes off in clumps so there isn’t a bunch of random hairs stuck to everything. Can I ask what product it is that you got from your groomer? We lion cut ours in the summer months because she gets too hot and uncomfortable. She looks pretty funny at first though

Here is her facebook page with pics of her. We got her from a local rescue two years ago! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lady-Hermione-of-Downton-Tabby/311257518977878

I love all of my cats’ fur, but for different reasons. My favorite is my medium to long haired torbie’s coat. It just soft like silk! I love it!
