I have 3 horses 20+ years old that I want to put on a basic oral joint supplement. One is in light-moderate work and sound, one is slightly arthritic and no longer ridden but wild in the pasture, and one is 30 but sound with no obvious arthritis. Just thinking something basic may make them feel good, but looking for as cheap as possible since they are pretty sound without anything. Two have been on complicated, expensive supplements in the past while working, just looking to tone it down. What’s the best ingredient? MSM? Glucosamine? Something else? Thanks!
I’ve had success with just MSM.
I really really like Absorbine Flex Max! Great stuff. Otherwise Smartpak Senior Flex was always a staple for my older guy. I have my retired 8 yr old on it too just because it’s a good overall supplement at a good price point.
I second MSM 20,000 mg daily.
I third the MSM recommendation. It’s dirt cheap and it produces visible results (which I can’t say definitively for any other oral joint supplement). Although there is a small portion of the equine population that doesn’t tolerate it.
Another vote for MSM
And yet another vote for the MSM. Cheap and does work. I had my 31 year old on it, still working upper level work. If I ran out and didn’t feed him it, he noticeably started creaking. Back on it, he was much better.
Actiflex 4000. Comes in a liquid, powder or pellet form. I feed the pellet form to my 16 yo. Be careful with straight MSM, it can be hard on some horses stomachs.
MSM vote!
Another MSM vote! Go for at least 10,000 mg/day.
