I agree that this is a good place to start and it is the reason why I feed my OTTB alfalfa pellets as part of his diet.
Glutamate (found in cabbage) doesn’t help prevent ulcers. Might do a little bit to help them heal.

Alfalfa hay.

Except it makes my horse unrideable.

But that is my point: is there some way you can order the 20 sachets and then call back and get the 200-sachet pricing instead of the 100-sachet pricing? The 100-sachet pricing is fine if that’s all you need or want, but what if you prefer the longer treatment protocol of 200 sachets. Or, more commonly, what if you plan a treatment protocol of 100 sachets and then want to use the remaining 100 sachets to wean the dosage down, either to what you consider a “preventative dose” or to (eventually) no treatment. If you’re force to pay the 100-sachet price after the 20-sachet sample set, and you really needed 200 sachets, you are implicitly getting screwed to the tune of paying $50 extra for 200 sachets (compared to buying at the 200-sachet price of $299).
To be fair to the company, that little caveat would explain why they can afford to give away 20 sachets to any ol’ person who asks. They will make it back in spades with a “force you to buy the remaining 80 at $1.75 per” system. And while I cannot fault a company for keeping itself in business, I’m asking if there’s a way for the customer AND the company to win by allowing you to order the 20 free sachets and then get the 200-sachet price on a “remaining” order of 180 sachets instead of 80.
jetandmegs4, I describe above what button to click to access the free sample. I can also link you right to the popup window that is yielded from clicking that button:
http://equine.omeprazoledirect.com/popup.php?p=granules
I agree that it’s a confusing site. The button SHOULD say something more obvious, like “Click here for info about the free trial.”
As for ranitidine dosing, I again refer folks to the recent thread started by JohnDeere with the words “Pop Rocks” in the title. That is where deltawave describes what I consider a very practical rationale for dosing at approx. 3000-3100 mg a day for most horses.
http://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/showthread.php?t=343421
Deltawave, you’re right that my math was off. I was assuming 3000 mg per DAY and really it’s 9000 mg per day. Even so, my local price puts me at about $19.50 per week–or $2.78 per day. I’ll edit my post above to reflect this. That still brings in ranitidine cheaper than Pop Rocks (which is about $2.98 per day for 2 packets per day, or $4.49 per day for the web site’s recommendation of 3 packets a day), but YMMV depending on local ranitidine prices. And Pop Rocks are certainly much more convenient than ranitidine.
J4J - I’ve had really good luck with just emailing Omeprazole Direct and asking them those tricky questions (I asked about getting 84 packets instead of 80). They are pretty good about writing back quickly.

Glutamate (found in cabbage) doesn’t help prevent ulcers. Might do a little bit to help them heal.
But Vitamin U, or S-Methylmethionine has been shown to help and that’s another active substance found in cabbage. Edited to add: Licorice is also beneficial as both a preventative and a curative. I use caution with licorice and horses, however, as it also has been shown to cause diarrhea in sensitive critters or when too much is consumed.
I’ll also go on to say that turning a horse out 24/7 (with shelter available when wanted) with a herd, making sure there is always something to graze (hay, grass, etc.) and treating the horse more like a horse than like a stable flower does wonders in preventing ulcers. Again, see other threads on ulcers. There’s alot of info in them.

Yes, but I just have no incentive to write that email. My horse is healthy and I was pricing ulcer products for someone else. I was suggesting that someone who WOULD benefit from writing that email invest THEIR 90 seconds in doing so and report back to the rest of us! Lazy on my part? Yeah, I guess, but I have no dog in the fight.

For some horses. Not all horses. For example, my OTTB (on the track for 8 years) wants IN. In spring/summer/fall I turn out from 5 pm to 10 am. By 10 am…he’s banging the gate to come in. Some horses just seem to like their stall time.

I have had good luck with an herb, slippery elm bark. It costs me less than $5/month. I get it as a loose powder in the herb section at Vitamin Cottage. I tried it on my current horse, who had lots of things that needed fixed when I got her and the scoping/meds route was out of my budget. She showed all the signs of ulcers, the herb has no side effects so I tried it. (I did try Ranitidine first but could not feed it often enough to tell if it was doing anything.) The ulcers symptoms went away gradually over a few weeks. She still gets a teaspoon everyday in her beet pulp, if I run out of the herb she starts showing discomfort again.
Where do you purchase this? I am interested for both my horse & husband!
Two things to keep in mind when “testing” out the pop rocks or the paste GastroGard or UlcerGard…
My mare did not respond after 8 days of full dose GastroGard per day. Vet said “nope, not ulcers then” After another few weeks, and my mare going completely off feed, I decided to get her scoped, and she had severe ulcers.

Also, if you “test” the pop rocks, and you’re intent is to heal any existing ulcers, don’t think that 1 packet per day for 30 days (or a week) will do it. You need to dose at the treatment dose (which for a 1000 lb horse is 3 packets per day for typically 30 days). If you use 1 packet a day for a week, those ulcers are not going to be healed. Don’t half-a$$ it, if you’re going to put them thru a trial of pop rocks, make it worth your time and money and run them the full course. Just because a horse shows positive improvement after a few days, a week, etc. doesn’t mean those ulcers are healed, it just means the omeprazole made them feel better enough to show you they were feeling better.
Just heard from Abler:
"Abler this past month has received an extra high demand for AbPrazole.
Production of a new batch is nearing completion – our team anticipates delivery of the new stock to be in the warehouse within next 3 weeks."
Thanks to COTH???
I think Abler should send COTH a collective thank you card.

Any health food store that sells real food and loose herbs should have it. I get it from a local grocer. Whole Foods carries it. I buy it loose because once they put it in a capsule the price goes through the roof. You can easily find information about it online, including some medical research.
I just got my Pop Rocks, it took about 10 days to get them. I had to go to the post office and sign for registered mail. The return address they used was my own!
I need to complete my order for the remaining 80…sounds like I may have to wait a while…

COTH: The Abler Enabler
I am on live chat with a representative right now…she said 2 weeks for the stock to be available. I am trying to get them to honor the $162.05 for the remaining 80 but to send me the Abprazole Plus (the one that contains the probiotics) so that I don’t have to wait for the regular. We’ll see if they will. She said they would contact me within 24 hours to let me know.

Hey, Sucker! (I’ve always wanted to say that!) They emailed me that I could have the probiotics sample for free. I don’t know about honoring the lower price, though.
Hopefully they will give me the 80 for the $162.05 and not the increased value of the ones with the probiotics. I told her that I would complete the order for the remaining 80 immediately if they would honor the price of the regular. She said they would notify me via e-mail within 24 hours of their “product line” section’s decision to do so.
