Best Clippers for Dog with Thick Undercoat?

Looking for some advice on the best clippers for my 90lb lab/golden/? mix. His undercoat is quite thick. In previous years, I have used my various horse ones with moderate success, but it’s time to invest in a set of clippers that really works well for dogs.

He and I thank you in advance.

Um, why are you clipping him? That breed shouldn’t be clipped, it destroys the coat.

What are you trying to accomplish with clipping/shaving the dog? You are better off bathing and brushing to get the dead undercoat out than you are shaving the dog down if you’re trying to keep him cool and/or cut down on shedding. Shaving the dog does a number of detrimental things. It can damage it to the point that the undercoat grows back even thicker than before. It can damage it to the point that the outer guard hairs won’t grow back at all.

That said, I’m a groomer and use these clippers. They hold up to the abuse I put them through at work. http://www.sstack.com/Horse-Care_ClippersAccessories_Clippers/Andis-AGC-Super-Two-Speed-Clipper/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=paid_search&utm_campaign=paid_search_google_pla&scid=scplp7073256&gclid=CjkKEQjw5LWcBRCeh8uUlqqluN4BEiQAfr64cM2BDiNtncW13aVAcmkdT-1OubQ1BTrdIcCD-GZoyC7w_wcB Mine current pair is 3 years old and I groom 7-8 dogs a day with them.

Thanks for your responses.

I’m aware of the cons of shaving a dog and what it can do to the hair. The reason that I clip ~this~ dog is that he has the strong lab gene that loves water and swimming and the golden gene of lots of undercoat on his neck and back leg area. It’s not for his shedding. I do not clip his back, I leave it for protection of the sun. I’ve been giving him this partial clip for several years and it allows him to enjoy his water time and also dry within a reasonable time frame. I’ve never had to clip our other dogs and I don’t.

Thanks again.

I’m really interested in this post (and any other input). I have a 5yo goldendoodle that gained nearly all the poodle characteristics and barely any of the GR. Her coat is super thick and curly, and mats with no effort whatsoever - and so I keep her shaved year round. I hate having to pay for it, and am interested in doing it myself. Any experience using those clippers mentioned on that type of coat?

I use those clippers on anything that walks through the grooming salon’s doors. Everything from Newfoundlands to my poodles. I use them on several doodles a week. They’ll work on any dog. The blade drive needs to be replaced periodically (once or twice a year at home\once a month at work) as with any clippers, but its a $5 easily replaced part (if you can operate a screw driver and have 5 mins, you can do it). They’re not cheap, but they’re heavy duty enough that if you’re not abusive, they should last the lifetime of your dog. In the salon, we get 3-5 years out of them before burning out the motor. Figure though 5 days a week, 7-8 dogs a day.

I have a pair of Andis that work well on all my fuzzy dogs, regardless of degree and breed of fuzz.
