Best Coat Shine?

What is the best Coat Shine for shows other then Show Sheen ( hate the way it makes my hands feel. ) ??
”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹any recommendations would be helpful! Thank you in advance!

Something like an Easy Boot that is meant for turnout might help, just be sure to remove daily to make sure it isn’t rubbing. But it sounds like long term you need to change something more. Giving an NSAID like Previcox or bute might make her more comfortable.

I like the Shapley’s Finishing spray! Only downside is that it’s in an aerosol can, so if that sound bothers your horse it may not work for you.

If you feed omega 3/flax, you won’t need any topical products. My horse seems to repel dirt and shines like a wet seal.

I love the smell of the Vetrolin shine product.

I like Vetrolin Shine, as it seems to be somewhat less drying than other shine products. A lot of people like Healthy Haircare concentrate, but that can be greasy if you use too much IME.

Dreamcoat coat spray by Carr and Martin.

Expensive but worth every penny. Smells divine. Knocks the dust off and allows a lovely polish on the coat. You can apply over the whole horse with no worries that it will make the saddle area too slippery

Go from the inside out. Feed some flax.

My guy does a good job of keeping a permanent layer of dirt on himself, but his coat still looks great.

If he is exceptionally dusty, I spray with a coat moisturizer, Dream Coat, or whatever product then soft brush followed by a sheepskin mitt. This is after curry and hard brush, but helps dust him off. I try to stay away from anything with silicone as that can be drying if regularly used.

Another vote for feeding flax. My horse gets compliments all the time for looking almost wet with shininess

Will also recommend flax. My chestnut literally looks like a copper penny when the sun hits him.

That said, I still like conditioning/shine sprays to keep dirt off and for shows. Vetrolin and Healthy Hair Care concentrate are my go-tos. The HHC I spray on a wet coat, Vetrolin more likely to use when he’s already dry, and it’s good in his tail as well. Both smell great and are pretty cost effective to use.

If you add daily elbow grease when grooming to feeding the flax you will be surprised!

Another flax fan.

My horses are ridiculously shiny. I used to go heavy on the elbow grease with daily grooming, in addition to good nutrition + flax. Life got crazy the past couple years and the daily grooming fell by the wayside. Horses are still as shiny as ever.

People ask me what I do to get them so shiny. Then they think I’m being a smart ass when I tell them nothing.

I like Vetrolin Shine but what I’d really recommend is Omega HorseShine supplement. My mare has the shiniest coat I’ve ever seen and I get comments all the time about how clean and shiny she is.

For those who feed flax as a supplement, how much do you feed? Is there a specific type of flax you buy?

I buy whole flax and feed anywhere between 1/2 cup to 1 cup a day to the horses (donkeys get way less).

There’s a big whole v. ground flax debate, more hotly debated than Coke v. Pepsi among horse people. I tried switching to ground flax a couple times and personally did not feel like I had the same level of results. You will find a lot of other people who disagree. So I would say it’s your call on which type you want to use.

@Texarkana thanks!

A currycomb.

They make it in regular spray bottles, too! I alternate between that and silverado. It’s also amazing for detangling a tail.

Curry curry curry. Medium bristle body brush, softer bristle body brush (mine is synthetic/horsehair blend) then a super soft body brush (mine is a horsehair brush).

This pony hasn’t had a “bubble bath” since I clipped him in November. Just water baths to cool him down and get the sweat off of him. Photo is from 3 weeks ago.
