Best current flea and tick chewable

I’m using advantix multi for heartworms, but it simply does not work here on fleas. A bit better on ticks, but not completely reliable. I’ve been supplementing after two weeks with Comfortis, but would like to add tick protection.

What would work best and safest with the Advantix Multi? We now have Ivermectin resistant heartworms, thanks to Hurricanes Katrina and Isaac, per my vet. The vets here don’t offer a lot of heartworm choice, and what they do have is godawful expensive. No off patent versions of anything at all, and non-ivermectin class heartworm preventatives have to be ordered.

I use NextGuard. I’m in Indiana and haven’t seen a flea or tick since using it. I have a friend in Phoenix who was having a terrible time with ticks last summer and she put her dogs on it and was amazed at how good it worked on them. Fleas hadn’t been a problem so we only know that it works for ticks from personal experience.

I have my adult dog on Comfortis and Heartguard. Puppy is on Trifexis. I’m not sure if either one works on ticks though.

My vet feels pretty strongly that the topical is much better. I use Parastar Plus. I asked about switching to chewables but the PP has 2 active ingedients and the chewables don’t have both. Just food for thought. I don’t love topical flea/tick stuff but I have to admit, this stuff WORKED last year.

I work in the field so I have samples of both Nexgard and Bravecto. My dog was never positive for tick disease before I traded topicals for orals. I’ve had excellent results with both Scalibor and Seresto collars.

I’ve used Bravecto and it is wonderful for ticks. My hound dog loves to hunt and would come back covered in ticks. I gave her Bravecto last spring and no ticks or fleas all summer. Gave her another Bravecto a week or so ago. The only side affect was gas.

I work in a clinic where we sell heartgard and nexgard. The vet is uncomfortable with the side effects of trifexis and comfortis, but especially comfortis. He has seen a few cases of really sick animals who got one of those medications, but the worst case he’s seen from nexgard is vomiting. We sell nexgard for around $100 for 6 months and people think it works really well.

Advantage multi does not protect against ticks, just fleas, heartworms and intestinal parasites. Why not switch to a chewable heartworm prevention as well as a chewable flea and tick prevention?

My vet does heartguard and nexguard. They recommended against a topical in a household with cats. I didn’t think it would be a big deal to put the topical on the dog before she went in her crate for the night so the cats wouldn’t run the risk of coming into contact with it when wet, but the oral is definitely more convenient.
