My mare has a trace clip in winter, and wears a neck cover with her blanket in cold weather. I have a 300gm Weatherbeeta, neck attaches to blanket with Velcro, and a 200gm Schneiders blanket with ring and clip to attach the hood.
Both these blanket and hood combos leave a diamond shaped gap above the blanket closure and neck cover. I am sure I am anthropomorphising, but that gap looks so chilly when she is clipped! Both seem to be standard design, tho.
I also have a combo neck Horze rain sheet with a much longer flap at the bottom of the neck cover, but there is a hell of a lot of different velcro strapping to figure out with it- not “user friendly” for barn staff!
Does anyone have a neck cover that protects that area at the base of the neck? Pictures would be appreciated. I am sure it would not be too difficult to sew one if I had a good idea.
Thanks all!
I’ve only seen this design for minis, but I really like the mini neck cover from Star Lake Tack that fits underneath the turnout blanket. It seems to have better coverage that way and is super convenient since it works with any turnout. If you’re crafty, maybe a similar design for a big horse could work for what you’re looking for?
check out their Winter Hood
The Rambo Optimo fully overlaps, no gaps whatsoever. My only problem with the Optimo hood/blanket combo is that for my. horse they are very restrictive in a grazing position.
I prefer the blankets with the hood attached for that very reason, OP!! I’ve always hated the gaps the removable neck covers leave. I have a heavy weight made by Tough One with an attached neck cover. It’s actually the second one I bought, the first lasted me a good 5 years.
Schneider’s makes a blanket where the hood is attached - no seam either. I use it for my mare who insists on standing in the rain. Keeps her dry up to her ears anyway.
