My big guy has a Fairly typical Iberian head shape: not terribly wide, but deep profile as measured from bridge of nose to under jaw. So the Caveson needs to fit Big. I Might have to do a Frankenbridle, But I figured I should ask here.
I might default to solo Equine because I love their leather so much and they have great customer service, but I thought I’d ask since someone else probably has had to put something together for their “noble headed” dudes.
You could look on Iberian specific tack sites
I found that my Schockemohle Venice bridle is very generous. My last PRE had the head profile that you’re talking about and there was still holes/room to spare in the noseband.
The quality is ok, but not my favorite. I was looking for something rolled that didn’t fasten on the top of the bridle as some of them do. So it met that criteria.
I haven’t seen a Lusitano with a head as big as most Hanoverian/Oldenburg/etc. If he is that big, I would look for a generic “oversize” bridle. You might need to go into the draft department.
Then again, I’m not a fan of the current bridles…maybe look into a consignment store for some simple older styles.
I second this. My 16.3 Lusi has one of these and it fits perfectly.
I designed my own line of bridles that fit a bit bigger and “broader” because my luso’s head is so large. He goes well in those (Altair Equestrian available at Piaffe - Dressage Lifestyle), as well as Finesse (though the X-Full because the Full is a bit tiny for him), and Devoucoux’s dressage bridles.
Here’s a pic of his big ol’ noggin in the Finesse.
OK, this photograph is extremely helpful. It illustrates my plight.
My guy doesn’t have a truly huge head. He has an Iberian head, which means that proportion a bit differently than others.
And here we have a great example. Looks very familiar. Very deep from the plane of the nose to the under part of the jaw. The usual Cavesons generally are too short, and especially the part that goes over the top of the nose is totally disproportionate and looks like a little slab of leather perched on the front of the head. Yuck. This looks great
Well darn it I can’t find it. Help!
To be clear, when I said the Schockemohle is generous, I meant specifically in the noseband/caveson, I didn’t mean the whole thing is huge. I understand, as the owner of Iberians, what an Iberian head is and the struggle that can come along with it. Gorgeous heads though!
I have a fjord, so I have the opposite problem. Really substantial through the brow band and crown, very short cheeks and probably normal nose. I just did frankenbridle through PS of Sweden, because they gave very good measurements and it was pretty easy to assemble online
I have a different oddity - horse/warmblood crown and browband, cob cheeks and noseband. I did pieces from PS of Sweden, and the noseband ripped off the hanger in less than a year. I ended up replacing the whole thing with a Bridle2Fit and am very pleased with the quality.
He’s gorgeous!
? Do you mean that removable flash thingy?
No. The strap that come off the top of the actual noseband piece, and buckles it on to the bridle. That strap ripped right out of the noseband.
Well that sucks! Fortunately my two headstalls have held up well over the last 5 years (but the little removable metal clip that holds the flash did not)
If you’re looking for the Altair Equestrian bridles she mentions, I think they’re here: https://piaffe.ca/collections/altair-equestrian
I really like flat leather on this type of head. I think you should do a Frankenbridle through somewhere like either Bridle2Fit or PSofSweden but go for flat leather. You will have a custom fit. I have a beautiful flat leather bridle for my coarser headed horse that has patent leather on the noseband and it looks super. Rolled or raised leather is not complimentary at all.
Thank you! He was originally pretty tough to find a bridle for and admittedly he’s gone in a lot of “Frankenbridle” set ups with a mix of full and x-full pieces
That’s the one, thank you! I wasn’t sure if it was allowed for me to self-promote and link to it. But if anyone has questions about the design, let me know!
