Best fixture for hot/cold mixer in washstall and barn

This seems like a stupid question, but we are replacing a leaking fixture in the wash stall. It has hot and cold water. We then attach a splitter to have one hose for washstall and one for watering.

Current fixture is like a big round 80s knob from a bathroom faucet or shower to adjust temperature. Is there a need to buy a pricey “frost free” type of fixture? We have wrapped this water connection with foam and towels in the winter to keep from freezing.

Is there a better way?

I put in something like this https://www.supplyhouse.com/Woodford-22PX-8-MH-Model-22-8-Length-1-2-PEX-Crimp-Inlet-Hot-Cold-Wall-Faucet-w-Metal-Handle

If what you’ve got survived your location since the 80s maybe try to find an identical replacement but the woodford one works for me when I had to replace the fixture the previous owner installed that exploded when frozen.

This barn has had many fixtures, haha. This old knob was placed about a year ago – not sure where it came from!

That’s what I have - caveat, I can’t say how it handles freezing since inside the barn doesn’t get below freezing. It’s lasted quite some time though!

We have another Woodford one, k![](nd of like the one pictured below (and set vertically so the outlet is at the bottom). Works well for us and has certainly encountered some freezing temps over the years.

I was at a barn that had a mixer type handle like you see in house showers and one of the first things my horse did was sit on it and bend it. I don’t even know if it lasted long enough to be tested by freezing weather. We do have one like that on our house to mix hot and cold water on an outside faucet, but the handle itself is located in the heated house.

Not enough information to answer this question.

Where are you located?
Is where the piping located a conditioned space?

If your pipes are available, or can easily be made available (run down the wash stall side of the wall and not within the wall) then …

2 ball valves (one blue handle and one red handle) and heat tape for the pipes. You can get these, easy peasy shark bite thingies at HD. You can get the same, probably comparatively priced valves at TSC. I shop whichever I’m closest to. The nice thing about not a complete fixture is that it’s cheaper and easier to replace components as the wear out over the years. Ball valves that aren’t allowed to freeze and thaw repeatedly should last years and years even under heavy use. Even frozen, once thawed, they seem to stand up.

A ball valve is this thingy https://www.homedepot.ca/product/sharkbite-ball-valve-1-2-in-/1000789731 and super nice thing, is if you leave your hose connected and the hose has a shut off at the business end, you have a quick visual to check that the valves are off and not straining your hoses unnecessarily. Inline with the pipe = on and perpendicular to the pipe = the last person to use the hose was smart and shut the water off properly
