Best fly sheet <$100?

At the rish of starting a redundant thread (though I searched first and didn’t find one):

What’s your favorite fly sheet <$100? Not so much for turnout/UV protection, but for stall wear - we try to keep the flies down in the barn, but it’s California, so it’s more covered pipe corrals than a walled building. The flies are already out, so we’re expecting a nasty summer. :frowning:

I’m not used to horses having to wear anything in the summer, so I worry about heat buildup. The fly sheets I’ve been looking at seem to vary in the amount of non-mesh fabric involved - does this make an appreciable difference in the warmth of the sheet?

Thanks.

For durability, I like the Baker fly sheets or the Smartpak/Textilene sheets, with a stiff type mesh. They also provide some UV blocking if that is an issue for fading coat color. For full coverage, I have used the Weatherbeeta sheets with belly and neck covers.

For slightly over your price range at $129, there is the Fly Turtle. I have heard good reviews of this one and actually just purchased one. http://www.turtleneck.biz/everything/flyaway-turtle-21.html

I live in humid central IL and I love the Saratoga fly sheet:

They’re not super durable like the Kensingtons, but for the price I can afford to replace it occasionally.

I second the Saratoga Flysheet! My Draft X mare has one and its by far the lightest weight one out there!

I am in California - and in a mare motel as well.

I like the Kool Coat airflow - my horse wore one all last summer, and even in 100 degree heat never broke a sweat.

I like that its machine washable (I wash mine weekly - I even use bleach!). Its held up very well - not a single snag or tear.

It has nylon lined shoulders (no rubbing) and has served me well. And it helps keep my horse clean.

Oh, and the price is right - I bought mine for around $50 - they are often on sale.

(oh, and they tend to run big. My horse usually wears an 81" and a 78" fits)

Has anyone tried this one by Weatherbeeta? It’s under $100 and has a belly flap (which I’m looking for), but gets mixed reviews.

A person at my barn just got this one

Her horse gets turned out with it and the others haven’t torn it up yet and stays on great.

Thanks, all! The Kool Coat looks like it might do the job (and yes, the price is great).

Yes, I have one for one of my horses. It snags more easily than the tougher mesh, so probably not as durable if a horse is tough on sheets. But the belly cover is nice, you can also remove it. And there’s a matching neck cover, too. IMO, it does not hold up as well as the Baker, Kensington or Kool Coat for washing.

Another vote for Kool Coats. Imo, it does the job just as well as some of the high dollar sheets, and they are really durable.

Thank you!

I like the Baker. It is warmer then the finer mesh sheets like the Rambo or Amigo but it holds up.

My mare gets hot easily and is an easy sweater.

The mosquito mesh sheet by sstack is the only one that keeps her comfortable and she doesnt’ overheat in. I absolutely detest SSTack blankets and refuse to use them, but I’m grudgingly a HUGE fan and advocate of the mosquito mesh sheets.

This one from Dressage Extensions is the best. Because of the cut, it doesn’t make the shoulders/withers sore as most others can. Wears well too.

Unfortunately looks like they are on closeout

I have one for an old, sway-backed pony. As the other poster mentioned, it’s not tough, but the fit is remarkable on the type that has issues with the necks slipping behind the withers. Mine was holy after the first year, but I’ve ended up using it two more years because it fits her better than anything else. I really need to replace it but it’s difficult to find her size. I did find it staticy on her cushingoid coat, but it keeps her pink POA skin from burning after her monthy body clips.

I also have a few of these. They do work just fine, my horse is not at all bothered by flies. But I live in Northern Ontario, Canada and on really hot days (that’s like 30 degrees C here) it makes my TB sweaty. The fit is also very weird. It fits front to back nicely but hangs down almost to my horse’s knees. I could also probably fit 2 or 3 of her necks inside the neck attachment. They’ve worked fine but I probably won’t be getting any more.

Thanks! This might actually work for my guy, then. Lots of things that fit him front to back are a bit short in the belly department, and he is nowhere near overweight.

Not sure about the heat factor, though…Kool Coat sounds nice there, but I read a review that the fit isn’t great for high withers?

I just got this one and really like it. Love the adjustability at the neck and shoulder. http://www.sstack.com/horse-blankets-and-sheets_fly-sheets-sun-protection_mosquito-mesh-fly-sheets/mosquito-mesh-closed-front-fly-sheet-32273c/
