Best Fly Sheet for Hot and Humid Weather?

I apologize if this has been talked about. I searched the forums but didn’t find any good info.

I live in Lower Alabama (Gulf Coast) and it is very hot and very humid. We recently relocated from next to Perdido Bay to a more land locked area. When we were near the bay, we didn’t have much of a bug problem. The new location is different. Horse flies and biting flies everywhere.

I’d like to give my boys some relief but my BO’s horse sweats under his fly sheet. My boys are in stalls w/ fans during the heat of the day but it’s still just hot.

What is the lightest, most breathable fly sheet out there? Does anyone have recommendations?

thanks yall!

I would NOT recommend Kool Koat or the Smartpak Deluxe for keeping cool!

I was able to get a Schneider’s Mosquito Mesh through a friend when I was in the US and I quite like it. I cut most of the nylon out of the front so it’s even cooler and it doesn’t rub. It’s a nice fit and breathable.

I was already looking at the Schneider’s ones and from this post and FB, I think that’s the ones I’m going to try. My BO did just get two new Weatherbeeta ones that seem to have pretty good airflow as well.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice yall!

I’m in a hot DRY climate (100+ degrees is common in July and August, mid 90s is a cool day). I have found the Weathabeeta sheets are probably the best, lightweight, cool, and no shoulder rubs. I’ve tried Tough-1 and Schneiders, and ended up with horrible shoulder rubs, and gapping at the chest.

The problems with the lightweight fly sheets - they don’t last long - I buy a few each fly season and count on them tearing. But my horses are OUT - in a stall, I think they’d last for the season.

And speaking of OUT - they do turn into sticker magnets - if your horse is turned out in them, anything growing/dying in the pasture will end up embedded in the fly sheet. Again, not a problem if they are inside.

Make sure you get a sheet with a belly cover. I also just ordered leg covers (Shires brand, $20 for a set of 4 through Riding Warehouse), since my mare’s legs are getting chewed up this year. We are having our worst fly season ever :frowning:

Yes I’ll definitely get a belly cover!

Good point about them not lasting long. The current schedule is inside during the day and out after supper. Fly sheets are off while they are in since the bugs are quite as bad in the barn. They go back on when the horses go out since dusk is a bug nightmare! My old man is easy on clothing, but my other guy can get rough.
