Best Fly Sheet for the Heat

My thoroughbred recently moved to all day turn out. In the past he has been inside during the day and comfortably wore a fly sheet with no sweating issues even in 95+ temps. Now even though he has access to fans and shelter he spends most of his day in the sun.

What is the best fly sheet you have found for high temps and humidity? We live in Charlotte NC so 90+ degrees and 80+ humidity are not uncommon.

My horse is in Hillsborough, NC. Our barn has found the Saratoga to be the best for the heat. It’s lightweight, wide weave, so keeps them pretty cool. It’s not the best if your horse or their pasture mates tend to tear up sheets, though.

Interested in this. My boarder and I have about 8 different models between us and they are all too hot for this weather range. :frowning: our horses hate bugs but also hate being sweaty!

My mare is wearing an amigo fly sheet with neck cover and in the 100 degree California sun, she does not sweat under it.

For the really hot, humid days, I like the fly sheets made out of the stiffer “screen” type material as opposed to the softer mesh. The stiffer fabric stays off the body instead of contouring to it, and seems to allow for more airflow.

I have several of these and really like them. They’re very durable and my horse doesn’t sweat in them nearly as much as the other types. My only wish is that the tail flap was longer.

I have found the Baker sheets best for heat due to their stiffness; they stand out from the horse’s body and allow air flow on the flanks and legs.

I never washed mine in the washer, not wanting to soften them. I just sprayed them with a hose and scrubbed with a hand brush any soiled spots, then air dried.

Very tough, very well made.

I do not recommend the Saxon flysheet, I bought one for my mare but I won’t put it on her if it is in the 90’s because it has plastic to reinforce the stitching at the shoulder.

The Saratoga. It’s thin and seems to do well in high humidity.

I’ve been really impressed with how cool my horses have been in their rambo protectors in 90+ degree temps with 60-70% humidity. I kept them naked for probably far too long this summer because they were sweating in the field, naked. But with the sheet they’re actually cooler and not sweating at all.
