Best Friesian Cross Association?

I am the new owner of a Friesian cross (3/4 Morgan, 1/4 Friesian) gelding that I plan to be my new Dressage horse. His previous owner registered him in FSHR, but I noticed that there are four registries he could qualify for, and I can’t quite tell which one makes the most sense for us. I’d like to participate in All Breeds awards at USDF recognized shows, and it’d be nice to earn points and/or have a registry specific championship to go to. I’m not seeking the easiest route to prizes, but I want to be in an association in which I can best enjoy my “off breed” horse, ideally with other people. I also don’t plan to “hedge my bets” by joining multiple registries.

If it matters, I’m in Region 9 for USDF, the previous owner was unable to get information about his dam, so we only know his sire (1/2 Morgan, 1/2 Friesian), and I’m not particularly interested or motivated to take my gelding to any inspections.

Appreciate any thoughts or input!

I don’t have an answer for you, but welcome to the forum. You may also want to ask in the Sport Horse Breeding forum. Enjoy your new horse. (Pics are always appreciated. :slightly_smiling_face:)

This is the list of accepted registries. I believe there are 3 for Friesian crosses. 1 or 2 may not require a pedigree from looking at their websites.

25% friesian is the minimum for most associations so having the sires information will be important.

I’ve looked at the USDF website, and there’s actually four different registries for Friesian crosses. hence my question on which one makes the most sense. All of them claim to have the largest membership and to be the oldest/best, so I was hoping from feedback on user experience/actual value other members have gotten.

Thanks! I’ll try that forum! Also, horse tax paid

Paid in full! Super cute.

I have my Friesian/TB filly registered through the FSA. They are very active with USDF shows / year-end awards and will supply high point ribbons if the show manager requests them. They are also very responsive to questions. Have fun with your guy!

Which registry did you decide to go with?
I have a part-bred with FSHR papers but looking at FHH and FSA. Sire is Friesian, dam is only listed as crossbred. My goals are dressage and working equitation. It appears that the sire’s DNA is available through KFPS so I am going to see if I can get it. I’ve reached out to his Amish owner without a reply so trying to make the best choice I can for my mare.

You can register with multiple Friesian registries. I have my 75% Friesian / 25% Standardbred registered with FHH and FSHR. I think FSA is the most active, then FHH, then FSHR. FHH required hair for DNA and I did the Friesian genetic testing since she is a mare. She came to me with FSHR.

I don’t know how active FHH is with end year awards but I think they’ve been a little slow this year with stuff from what I see on FB groups.

The other groups may have your horse’s sire DNA on file as well, you can normally submit your horse’s DNA and known parts of the pedigree and they will check against other data that they have.
