My horse hasn’t been ridden in eight months due to my health issues getting in the way, I’ve noticed his saddle(08 cwd mono) is a bit wide on him now. I’m looking for a good but affordable half pad to temporarily fix this problem once he gets back into work and then I won’t need it. Thanks.
Since you’re bringing the horse back into work and very likely his back will gradually change shape as he rebuilds his topline, I’d recommend looking for something with shims. I love my Mattes, but have heard good things about Equine Comfort and Fleeceworks - both on the more affordable end.
I use an ECP correction pad, but I’ve taken the crappy foam shims out and replaced with felt at the suggestion of my saddle fitter. Good price point and does the job.
Prolite has a cheap, shimmable pad that would do the trick.
I use an ECP correction pad and have removed the foam shims. I took the shims and traced them on a yoga mat and then cut them out and used those for the shims and works well. The ECP half pad is affordable and easy to wash. This is what I use with my jumping saddle.
For my dressage saddle I use a Mattes pad. not as easy to care for but I use the felt shims that came with it as well as a yoga matt shim that was traced from the felt to get the correct fit. The only down fall with Mattes is they are a little harder to care for and you also periodically need to take a certain type of brush to re fluff the sheepskin.
I’m in the same boat- bringing a horse back into work and needing to pad to make my saddle work as he comes back. I had an ogilvy but it was too much padding, so I went and bought the “exselle saddle fitting half pad”. It was cheap, shimmable, and not as thick as my ogilvy. It’s doing the trick as we develop muscle!
