My poor old Friesian gelding gets scratches and build up of what can only be described as gunk on the backs of his fetlocks where his feathering is. What kind of shampoo or spray or other treatment will clear it up quickest? It makes him very itchy.
Banixx works well
Had scratches on all four pasterns when horse insisted on hanging in the water to graze after heavy rainy week. Recommended by a fellow boarder, and in 7 days he was normal. He had even splashed enough puddle water that his tummy need help! However, he wears no feathers.
Seems to be available in most feed stores and tack shops.
I’ve tried Banixx because I’ve been told it really works, but I didn’t notice any difference. The kind I tried was is a spray bottle and I feel like maybe I wasn’t applying it correctly because I really had to bend down awkwardly to spray it on the underside of his fetlocks under all that hair. Is the Banixx you used a spray as well?
First, I would suggest clipping the feathers off to get to the skin because that is a lot of hair to get through when applying any spray or cream. Are there scabs yet or is just flaky skin? Once it progresses to being more than just flaky skin, you have two options. Ask for a prescription for a cream from a vet or try the old style method.
Furazone,Dmso,Panacur mixture. This will knock it out but is harsh on their skin. I use it on my morgan.
A vet would prescribe a white cream that will fight the bacteria which will work the best.
Clip the feathers, equiderma shampoo, then equiderma skin lotion.
If it’s really bad and nothing is healing it up you might want to get your vet to do skin scrapings, or you can probably do them yourself and bring it into the vet. You want to do this before you start putting a bunch of stuff on it because that will contaminate the sample. Scratches can be bacterial, fungal, mites etc it’s a broad term and it is best to know what you are dealing with if it is persistent.
Clip the area, use panalog, and it should clear up fast. If you can keep him out of the mud for a few days, even better.
My vet gave me PhytoVet CK spray to use on my Clyde. You have to really get in and part the feathers and rub it down to the skin but it really does work. Just FYI it will dry your own nails out if you don’t apply with gloves. It is a chlorhexidine spray so I would think anything you can find local with chlorhexidine in it would work. I have only been able to get the PhytoVet through the internet.
Have also had to go the clipping, DMSO, Furazone route with a particularly bad case a couple springs ago.
Take a deep breath and use the clippers.
Personally, I avoid anything greasy; it tends to make dirt and bedding stick.
Gentamicin/betamethasone spray, chlorhexidine cream ( judiciously applied, not slathered), triple antibiotic ointment (again, not slathered), or similar work well.
Hilton Herbs Mud Defender.
The supplement is for chronic cases that get rain rot or scratches every year.
The lotion works pretty damn good on its own merits…great for all kinds of skin issues.
that stuff isn’t cheap, but it’s what the vet gave my BO who has a Clyde with TERRIBLE (okay, HAD) scratches in his feathered region. It cleared it up in three shampooings, and there is also a matching cream which the vet gave, to be applied to keep it from redeveloping. Upon looking into it, it seems it’s mostly Chlorhexidine, so it’s possible a spray bottle of that solution could be helpful as well.
I echo the Equiderma recommendation! It will take care of it in 1-2 days then can be used for prevention.
I would also recommend adjusting his nutrition to include support of the immune system. Increasing my boy’s omega 3’s with a flax supplement did the trick. It’s very rare he gets any sort of skin funk anymore when before anytime it rained he got rain rot.
My lease horse had terrible scratches. I finally found a combo that works…washing with Antibacterial/AntiFungal shampoo / drying / then applying the magic goop - Rood and Riddle Proud Flesh ointment. Cleared the sores up in mere days. Fantastic stuff.
