Best Girth to Help With Saddle Slipping

So my saddle slides backwards when i’m riding and I started riding with a breastplate which has definitely helped.

But I was hoping to get some suggestions on a good girth to help prevent the sliding. I rode him in one of the fuzzy fleece girths which didn’t work too well. Now i’m riding him in an all leather girth, which is working but he isn’t the biggest fan of it, and I feel like i have to pull it super tight .

So if y’all have any suggestions that would be great!

Thanks!

Sounds like the saddle may not be fitted properly, if it’s really slipping around so much.

The girth won’t really help as it sounds as a saddle fit issue. Best case- get a saddle fitter. Worst case- try a memory foam type pad to help with fit.

I agree with saddle fit however horses with big withers can have slipping issues. What has worked for me on a few large wither horses -

No slip under pad - http://www.tack-wholesale.com/English_Pads/Non_Slip_Pad.html

Mikmar girth - https://www.mikmar.com/bit-pages/Hunter-jumper-girth.html

It could be that the saddle is starting out too far forward, and is “slipping” back to the proper place. Many H/J students are taught to put the saddle too far forward. If that is not the case, many people say that the Professional’s Choice neoprene lined girths work well without irritating the horse.

Make sure your tree points are placed 2-3 fingers behind the scapula. Some TB types have a long wither and that makes the billets want to hang down further back. If that is the case, try an anatomic, not shaped girth.
It could also be a function of saddle fit and I would definitely get that checked as many people size too narrow to clear big withers.

I use a Professional’s Choice girth, which has nonslip rubber on the inside. Works quite well for me!

I’ve used the $30 non-slip pad and find it helpful. That might solve your problem without having to buy a new girth. I use the Professional Choice neoprene girth, but that alone didn’t keep my saddle from slipping.

Thanks for all the advice!

I think one of the reasons it went sliding backwards is my girth was a bit to big and could have been tightened more. I have been using a 50 all leather girth and a breastplate this week and haven’t had any issues so far.

I have this girth from Smartpak. Definitely seems to help.
