Best Goat Halter

Hi I just discovered that the nylon quick release dog collars that I have for my goats will release if I am trying to pull goat away from something it wants to eat. I would like to take my goats on walks around the neighborhood and think a goat halter might be better than a collar. They are full size Oberhasli (sp) goats and I would like to get a pink and a blue halter for the girl (Luna) and the boy (Loki). Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

Like these?

We made our own out of rope, double braiding the nose part, leaving a place for the rope to slide on one side to go under the chin and leaving the end as a leadrope.
Looked like these:

We had a goat dairy, nubians and a few Toggenburgs and even had some goat shows, sure lots of fun these.

too early as I read the title as Best Goat Hater… might be because I have spent a few days re-fencing the east pasture line as the new neighbors have brought in a herd of goats who decided our pasture was better than theirs …

I was thinking Yes I am now a pretty good Goat Hater

I like the cattle type halter (the second one Bluey posted) because you can teach them to lead pretty well. It’s easy to pull and then release when they take a step if they decide to get balky.

I love taking my goat for a walk! I think he hates the halter more than the collar but is easier to control with a halter.

Totally agee with Roughout, those slip halters, in calf size are perfect for goat leading! I say calf over sheep slip halters because you have a lot better length of lead rope. I do suggest wearing gloves to prevent rope burn if they fight you, try to run or get balky. Sheep halters only have a couple feet of rope, barely enough to hold onto.

With practice, your goats should lead along nicely for easy handling on walks or any place you want to take them. I do not suggest leaving them tied for long times or unattended in these slip halters. They are “ever tightening” so a goat could get choked if he rubbed his halter down on his neck. For leaving tied, the first halter in Bluey’s post that buckles on, would be a better choice. I do think sheep and goats lead easier with the slip halters. DD used to walk her 4H market lambs daily in these slip halters, never had a loose one, they handled easily with daily work.

Actually, the goats have been out on walks twice with the dog collars but it wasn’t until yesterday that one of them REALLY wanted to eat something in the backyard and the dog collar released. They already know how to walk with me but I think a halter would be better as would offer more control especially if they are eating something I don’t want them to eat. I’d never leave them tied out here due to coyote population and likely tendency to get into mischief.

Well once my little precious first baby goat outgrew her cat collar (with a bell ) I always used leather collars with metal buckles on her and future pet goats.
But growing up there were a few big goats at the lesson barn I rode at, we would take a nylon horse halter flip it upside down and put it so they nose part was around the neck and the chin-throat area was over the withers on to the back, poll area around the goats girth, and we led them around with these “harnesses”!

You guys are classy goat owners! My boys had to make do with DIY braided baling twine halters when I needed to lead them somewhere.

In my head I’m hearing Jeff Foxworthy say “You might be a redneck…”

I ordered them some goat halters. I decided on black because the goats are oberhaslis and are brown and black. I think brown would have been nicer but I couldn’t find one that didn’t have a chain and I don’t think I need a chain. Luna, the girl, will have a pink leash and Loki, the boy, will have a blue leash.

Sounds like that will be a good compromise on the colors.

Will we get pictures of the halter models?

this one but in black (I can’t get it to link directly to black)

“Halter models” as in the goats modeling the new halters and leads.

Well I am still waiting for the halters to arrive. I have the blue leash but the pink one was not available until recently- it’s on its way. I hope these goats appreciate how stylish they will be! These are the cute collars they have that release when they pull (which is probably safer anyway).

and here’s the leash.

Now all I need are some cute goat name tags with my phone number.

And I want to make a sign for their pen that says
“Free Goat Kisses!!!”

Wow, psychodelic goats.

Could you go by Petsmart and engrave some dog tags for your goats?

I think there is a cheaper place on line that I used before for cat tags. I’ll get dog sized tags since they are goats but not ones that are shaped like a dog bone!
