Best Groundwork/manners books/ideas

Hi all.

Looking for good books about groundwork for horses, and helping with getting polite ground manners. Potential new horse (on trial) is a bit … Rude-ish on the ground. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for books or exercises that helped.

Thank you in advance.

I like the Parelli seven games. Free info on the internet…look it up. One would have to buy a rope halter and lead and preferably the Carrot Stick. I am not a Parelli nut and don’t do it all the time but the basics go a long way.

Honestly I just do really simple stuff in the arena. Before and after working my horses I like to have them back away from me, move their haunches away, step forward and stop when I stop. I lightly use a whip if I have to. Little things like that have really helped my horses become more well behaved.

I don’t like all that Parelli rope shaking…I happen to like John Lyons…his early VHS series is great. He has a leading and loading video that’s good.

After spending time with the best stallion handler I’ve seen, I’m a firm believer in being “prepared for eventualities” with the appropriate tools to address misbehaviors.

This is a good ground work training video from Jerry Tindell:

I know this is an old thread but thought to add my question here as it is related. My new 3-year old is spending a few months at his breeder’s while she gets him started. I plan to bring him home and work with him on the ground, mostly, for another six months or so before getting him restarted and going under saddle as a 4-year old. Some one mentioned Steve Halfpenny’s 100 mile groundwork program as a potentially useful program for that interim period. Has anyone used that or another groundwork-based program with a young horse? Any recommendations or other opinions? Thank you.
