Best Half Pad for under the saddle pad

Do they make a half Pad that has no rolls? I know I can do a custom Mattes pad, but don’t want to wait that long. Any other suggestions to reduce a lumpy look? My current half Pad has a back roll and that looks really funny.

This is my favorite: https://www.cavallo-inc.com/product/all-purpose-english-saddle-pad-performance-enhanced/

I have a yummy Christ Lammfelle pad with only a roll at the pommel, or are you looking for a pad with no rolls at all?

I have the same and love it!

These are the half pads I recommend. http://www.prolitepads.com/

I love thinline pads. Excellent shock absorption and no rolls. Though the ones with fleece do have rolls

I use a pro-lite pad on pretty much every horse I ride, either a flat one for anti-concussive use or a shimmed one to help tweak the fit on the growing/changing young horses. However, I always use it between a square pad and the saddle, not directly on the horses’ back. Wouldn’t the sweat hurt the material if it was used directly on the back?

I ditched my Thinline Ultra w/ sheepskin in favor of the Tri Pad Prolite. I really needed/wanted a pad that had more adjustability as my horse grows and that wasn’t a complete struggle to put shims in, and this one has lived up to all the good stuff I’ve heard about the Prolite pads.

OP, if you mean a sheepskin half pad, I don’t think they are meant to go under a cloth pad. You can use a sheepskin pad alone, fluff against the skin. This is more common in hunter/jumper pads, but I’ve put a sheepskin halfpad alone under my dressage saddle. The saddle flaps got a bit sweaty, but maresy loved it. Most recently I got one of those combined pads, that are a dressage cloth pad with a sheepskin lining attached.

This style, but not from Mattes, a much cheaper imitiation!

I think though that these are very hard to keep looking nice. You need to use Melp or Leather Therapy to preserve the sheepskin, but that doesn’t really get the cotton quilt part fully clean. But if you put the saddle pad in with detergent, bleach, hot water, like you would to get a regular saddle pad (especially a white one) clean, you will fry the sheepskin.

I am not familiar with 1/2 pads that go under a square pad. I have only ever used a 1/2 pad or a back saver pad ON TOP of the square pad.

I actually got the idea to try it from here. https://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/forum/discussion-forums/dressage/30955-sheepskin-half-pads-underneath-or-on-top-of-regular-pad

It makes my horse happy so will try to find the best option.

The problem with this is saddle pad collection I’ve worked hard to establish over the years

The sheepskin is attached with velcro. I suppose you could add velcro to your own pads and swap the sheepskin around as needed. They even sell just the sheepskin replacements you could add to your own pads if you were so inclined.

I really loved my Toklat Matrix pad, and it had the added benefit of being machine washable. But they are THICK. Once I got a better fitting saddle I had to sell it because it was just too thick.

Have a look at the Eskadron sheep/lambskin underlay 1/2 pads, they’re absolutely brilliant!
