Best Irish Knit?

For whatever reason, I’ve recently been itching to buy a nice Irish knit sheet… one of the good, substantial ones (if they even exist any longer!). Which one is the best? Do I go totally custom, or is the Curvon/Baker one a good bet? Thanks!

I have two favorites, one being Jacks and the other being Triple Crown. The Jacks is the best, IMO, and is very reasonably priced ordered through the Jacks Manufacturing website. Deliver is really fast and you can customize it, to an extent.

Others just don’t compare. I don’t think the Curvon is that great.

Another vote for Jack’s!!!

I like Jack’s and, yeah, “Go custom, or go home.” You know the kind of Hunter Princess I am, OP.

I think you can order 'em from Bit of Britain or The Farm House. I found the cost to be reasonable.

I will say that Jack’s version of “piping” isn’t. IIRC, they use an under-layer of the same webbing used to bind the edge. But it seems finer than that. If you want to see what Hunter Green binding with black “piping” looks like, lemme know and I’ll e-mail you a picture.

Jack’s hands down.

Does the jack’s slip around? I have had sheets with just those two vertical straps to hold them in place back in the old days and the blankets rotated horribly. I swore never again…but maybe you don’t use these as long so it is OK?

I have used them overnight in the stall before a show and they stayed in place but I crisscrossed the straps under the belly. It wouldn’t be ideal for everyday use like that but I haven’t had an issue.

Well, that was unanimous.

I have a Jack’s irish knit that is at least 20 years old (don’t know exactly since I inherited it with a horse) and it’s still going strong. The neck area is on the big side but that may be a result of the years of use rather than anything to do with the original fit.

Geeze. Maybe I should order another Jacks or two.

Would anyone mind sharing the general price point for a Jacks? Thinking it might be a nice present for my sister’s mare but she is still growing so perhaps it may be a better investment down the road.

$80-100ish per google

IIRC ordering them in the colors you want is the same price as “stock.” It just might take a smidge locker.

911! PSA 911!

Just fished out my ordered-last-year Jack’s and found a tag that says “100% polyester.” What? It wasn’t listed this way in the specs and the material feels like the traditional 50% cotton/50% polyester to me.

But things can change between a manufacturer’s materials and retailer’s (usually older) description, so be sure to ask about the material if this concerns you and you are ordering a Jack’s irish knit these days.

While we’re on the subject, this price is awfully good and lots of sizes are left

I just checked my 6-8 year old Jack’s and it also has a “100% Polyester” tag on it. Perhaps that is why they keep their shape so well? I am stunned. It looks and feels like cotton.

Are these used as is or under a cooler?

Either way is good. I believe the irish knits were originally intended to be a stand-alone cooler.

If you really want a quick drying system, use an Old School Big Hole cooler underneath a pure wool one.

But you could do similar with an irish knit and wool.

My last choice would be irish knit and synthetic fleece.

MVP - “Old School Big Hole” - Ah, I remember those. And have a friend who is currently searching for a new one these days. Good luck to her.
As for the OP Pattnic - you didn’t say if you were looking for shows, or for home use. I’ve got two Triple Crown Irish knits for shows, and they are both gorgeous, and have held up forever. Or almost as long. Both with trim and piping, one without a surcingle, one with. They are wonderful.
For home use, I have Dover Irish knits, which sadly are too big in the shoulders/neck, and have stretched out even more so over time. But, for the price, and the fact that they are going to get beat up and tossed around over blanket racks, stall doors, etc, they have been fine.
I might just have to try a Jack’s, since everyone here is so woo-woo about them.

NetEq sale must be over. Price went back up
