Best leather halters?

I know there have been many threads before but I can’t seem to find them. Looking for a really nice quality leather halter to ask for as a Christmas gift. My gelding has a smaller, cob sized head so I don’t want a anything that runs too big. Thanks everyone!

Walsh makes a beautiful one, I think its size 7 for cob?

Hands down Quillin

stunning value. Beautiful leather and craftsmanship for not very much. Customizable for the hard to fit head and a wide range of sizes from baby to big guy

I never shipped in anything else. I considered mine a very important item of safety equipment.

Yes! Quillin was one of the names I remembered! I will look them up now!

Do the horse sizes run large or small? He takes a cob sized halter in everything else but I just want to make sure their cob won’t be too small.

Walsh. Soft, comfy, well made, great leather.

I have Walsh, Quillin, and Albright’s leather halters. They are all nice but Albright’s is the shining star…I always order from them now. I have one halter that is probably 8 years old and has seen daily use (for everything…grooming, bathing, hauling, everything) and it is still going strong and looks great. I bought my first one at Rolex years ago and never looked back! Google Albrights leather.

Quillin is my “go to” for over 15 years and they have great customer service!

I have a handful of leather halters that I just absolutely adore. One of them is a now-11-year-old Weaver that is hands down my favorite. Sadly, I’ve never been able to find the same one and I can’t remember where I got it way back when. I have another that I got from Smartpak with no brand names stamped on it…also, can’t find the same one again!

So when I went to order a new halter for my daughter’s xmas-surprise-pony, I searched here and after reading Quillin over and over again decided to order one.

Holy cow, color me impressed! The halter is just lovely, but what really makes it so super nice is the nameplate! $90 all in (IIRC), and this is what I ended up with:

Thanks to all of the COTHers who have posted about Quillin over the years. I think I’ve found the place that I’ll be buying leather halters from now on

WALSH!!! I’ve had the same walsh halter for almost 20 years and it is still beautiful!!

I have a beautiful one from the Tack Shack in Ocala. Triple stitched with brass hardware. It fits my mare beautifully, I really love it.

I love my quillins halters. You would need to check the sizing chart. My Arabs that are normally cobs between yearlings size 2 and size 3. It looks like they have added a cob size, I don’t remember seeing that last time I ordered this spring.

Another BIG vote for Albright’s. Their halter plates are a major cut above too! I have cob-sized horses. Some wear size 4 some wear 3. They will be very helpful on the phone so you order correctly.

No connection to Albright’s here - just love the product!

Does anybody have any comments on the hardware of these halters? I’m not sure what it is, but they just appear cheap to me. Not saying that they are actually cheaply made, but something about them doesn’t do it for me. I think it may be the finish; that shiny “gold” vs the brass. Reminds me of the cheap-o $20 halters you can get at any tack store.

Is this the new fashion? The Quillin, Tack Shack, and Albright halters I looked at online all seemed to be like that.

I have one of these, too–their track halter. It’s beautiful, and the stitching detail on the crown piece is stunning.

The Albright’s hardware is very nice and seems “old-time” to me (and I’m pretty old!). In fact I still have a good halter from the 60s and the hardware is very similar.

I absolutely love the Walsh British Leather Halter. It looks lovely on any head, breaks in beautifully, and has real brass hardware. And they last forever! My halters stay on for turnout and my mare came to me in hers and still wears it 6 years later. It’s actually turned me into a bit of a halter snob because I love them; if it were up to me I wouldn’t put a horse in anything else.

Another vote for Quillins! Best ever. The hardware is high quality, leather is rich, nameplates are beautiful, deeply engraved.

For the Quillins do I want the turnout halter or the sale halter?

I use the turnouts for everyday use.
