BEST Leg and Hoof Wraps for COLD Induced Laminitis

Someone here a while back mentioned fleece lined leg wraps that were reasonably priced and kept legs warm in winter.
Looking for name brand and best price. Also any suggestion for hoof warmth. Getting prepped for cold weather which brings
on problems for my old guy who has poor circulation in legs and hooves.
Thanks!

Toklat shipping boots. Sturdy, inexpensive, hard (impossible) to keep clean of shavings. They also have some quilted ones that I have not tried.

Shire’s shipping boots would be my choice.

If it’s a circulation issue, I’d do something like Back on Track Quick Wraps or one of the similar knock-off brands - Schneider’s and Smartpak both have them now.

Yes, I have a bunch of BOT Quick Wraps and use them, I just thought maybe additional leg wraps on top would help.

The Toklats have like sort of attached bell booty things and the whole boot is lined with fleece. Equilibrium has “stable chaps” that are the same design- so they cover
a good bit of the hooves as well. You could try BOT bell boots I suppose, which might keep the hooves warmer. I was just reading about a Norwegian study on The Horse
website and it mentioned that metal shoes will cause heat loss. So there is that. Maybe?

I haven’t used them, and I haven’t looked into the science at all. But check out Incrediwear. They claim to promote circulation and seems they can be used hot or cold?

Very timely post as I believe my pony had this happen to her this past winter. She was great up until it got really cold. I bought her a pair of cloud boots and think I will find her another pair for her back feet. She LOVES them! BOT wraps sound like a great idea too.

I also have one of these, a winter lamenitis case. The vet does not believe it is real, because they don’t teach about it in vet school. But it is “a thing”, it is real, I watched it happen this winter, and we are in recovery now. It has been “HELL” for her to go through this, and for me, watching. All the pain medication in the world does little to help- bute, banamine, meloxicam had little effect for her. I used the “shipping bandage” option in an attempt to keep her feet warm, after an internet friend who also has one, diagnosed it. I had hoof boots on her too, but they didn’t help much. I was thinking hard about using those “hand warmer” packets somehow, but was afraid of them getting too hot, or breaking the packets open and getting into the bedding or feed. It was -38C here last winter, and my barn is very open to the elements. My other horses (TB and TBX) run and play turned out in the snow all winter, this one, a “feral bred” horse, has this issue. Go figure.

She was OK until temperatures hit -10C one night in fall, that was when I noticed that she was tender footed the following morning. And things got progressively worse from there. Since I can not keep her feet warm where I am adequately where I live, I am going to try to rehome her into a warmer climate, as a show hunter prospect, which was MY plan for her. Her xrays are good, no rotation, I checked that. Apparently, there is usually no rotation with this issue. The damage from freezing just has to grow out. And she has to LEAVE this area before winter sets in again, and live somewhere that is warmer in winter, with a cozy stall, and NO turn out in any snow that falls. And she should be fine in this situation. And I sure wish that the veterinary profession would look into this issue, because it would have been helpful to know what I was dealing with earlier. Though in my situation, I’m not sure how I could have improved her situation. But that “blank” look coming from the vet when you mention “winter lamenitis” is unnerving.

Jioagulan helps increase circulation., I’m curious if that would help. I might try that with my pony this winter. It’s so crazy, she made a miraculous recovery and did have some rotation, but thank goodness no sinking. So we will try leg wraps and cloud boots for really cold hard ground and see if that helps her this time around. If it happens again, I have a friend who lives in a warmer climate who loves this little girl so I very well may have to rehome her as well ;(

Regarding warmer climate, I hate to tell you, but I’m in Central Florida. It rarely goes lower than mid 30’s. my guy starts showing
symptoms of cold when it starts to get in the 40’s at night. 40’s. We haven’t even had a freeze the last two winters. Despite wraps, blankets and shelter, he keeps getting worse each year. I’m sure age is a consideration also. He’s 21. Originally foundered at 4 1/2. Was fine for 10 years then boom, every winter, problems as the temps fall at night.

:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

That’s not good news.

You might look at Ukelele Lamin-Ox has 4,000,gm of jioagulan plus a bunch of other herbs.
