Besides wrapping it, and/or icing it, what do you prefer to put on the swollen leg before wrapping it. I’ve rubbed absorbine on my arm just to see what effect it has, and in a couple minutes I can’t feel anything, so wondering if you put that on a leg, that has hair on it, how much good would it actually do? Just wondering…
Biegleoil is good, absorbine is good, although, it’s a combo of the rubbing along with the liniment. Wet the hair down really well, rub vigorously until dry, then wet the hair down again, then wrap the leg is how we were trained as kids.
If you rub that much, you will be able to feel the results on your hands for at least a good hour, if not a couple of hours.
Good luck! what’s up with the leg?
PLLLLLEEEEEEEZZZZZZ DO NOT RUB A LINAMENT ON AND THEN WRAP unless linament specifically says it is safe to…MANY linaments specifically say DO NOT WRAP on them
Honestly, I don’t think I would put linament on a swollen leg. I’d figure out why it was swollen, and pick a treatment that works better for that problem.
I would use poultice or just wrap dry.
Poultice
Or, if the condition warrants it, sweat wrap (furacin + DMSO) not liniment
Are we talking about a hot and swollen leg, or a cool and filled leg? Because those two things require different approaches.
If you mean stocking up, I’m a big fan of the Sore No More poultice
Both Bigeloil and Absorbine specifically say on the label they can be used under wraps.
For anything swollen, I poultice and ice. I don’t use linament except to rub legs down after a hard workout.
I’ve seen absorbine blister, not 1, not 2, but 5 horses. One horses back was blistered after a girl put it on her horses back and then put a sheet on. It says safe to wrap, but I obviously don’t think so.
I would usually do a sweat - so furazone and DMSO, covered in saran wrap, and wrapped.
I’m talking about a hot swollen leg, and I mean besides cold hosing or icing.
Re putting a product under a wrap…I guess it would depend on how sensitive the horse’s skin is. I sweated a leg quite often (just using furacin) because the vet instructed me to do it. The horse ended up with a horrible sore, open weeping leg. Also, she tried to chew off the wrap, (poor girl) got the wrap all wound up tight around the bottom part of the leg, and caused even more injury. Horses!!!
I’m afraid to use DMSO because I heard that can blister. None of the vets I’ve used ever say to use DMSO when wrapping. But I think some vets swear by it?
Poultice a hot swollen leg. No liniment on that, especially under wraps.
I really like the Sore No More poultice, it’s expensive but works very well and washes/brushes off easily.
Another huge fan of Sore-No-More poultice. It’s main property is Arnica. If OP is allergic to arnica wear latex gloves.
No liniment on a hot swollen leg…remember, if it’s hot make it cold, if it’s cold, make it hot. I’ve seen many limiments blister skin so I would stay far away from it on a hot leg. Ice, cold water hosing and poultice are your friends until the leg is cold…then if it’s still big but cold, go to a sweat, start with a “cold” swear first like furasone and then you can add dmso to it if the leg takes the steam and doesn’t get mushy. If the leg gets mushy and soft it means there’s still heat in it somewhere and you should go back to a cold treatment for a day or two. Keep working on the leg until you can get a hot sweat on it 3 days and it stays good and tight.
Yes. Treatment will vary.
