Looking for a new coat for the winter. I want waterproof, mid-length, with zippers on the side so I can ride in it, and as light weight as possible but still warm for mid-Atlantic cold and wind. Any suggestions?
I always like the Mountain Horse. jackets.
After reading a similar thread on this topic, where Mountain Horse jackets were recommended hands-down, I found one on Poshmark – it lives up to it’s reputation! It’s a really great jacket and extremely comfortable.
For real cold (as in Canada -20C misery), I heartily recommend the LLBean Baxter park. Get it a bit oversized so you can layer with active wear + down vest - best overcoat ever made. I will wear it to warm up, then down to vest/sweater to ride with coat back on for cool out.
I have a Mountain Horse jacket/parka that I love, but I couldn’t find a link to it. It seems they don’t make that particular model anymore
Shame, because to me that was the perfect riding /barn jacket as it checks all my personal requirements: long enough to cover my butt, 2-way front zipper and side zippers for ease in the saddle, very rugged outer layer, quilted inside, tons of pockets everywhere and warm warm warm (actually, too warm to ride in unless just walking on trails - in Maine winters).
However, this one looks good as well, for winter layering:

I love Mountain Horse. I have one jacket from good old Tack of the Day (not this new one) and jacket/coat that is mid-thigh that I got from Adams Horse Supplies. I wear that one when it’s in the teens.
I’ve been enjoying my new Carhartt Shoreline jacket. It’s on the lighter side, but still warm and waterproof. It’s a good length, flattering fit, and has comfy soft interior cuffs on the sleeves.
I bought a Tempo at Greenhawk a few years ago. I really like it and warm enough for Canada😊
