I’m a horse person but I"m a long long way off from 10. My daughter has the horse bug and I’d like to get her one of the magazines for a stocking stuffer. As a kid I remember reading them cover to cover then clipping out my favorite photos and plastering my wall with them (I was super popular…). Anyway which magazine would you recommend? Horse illustrated (a little of everything) or practical horseman (HJ focused) or some other magazine I don’t even know about…
I bring my used Chronicles to the barn for the kids. While they are a tad older than 10, more in the 11 to 12 year old range, they seem to enjoy them. The only time I did not bring them was when the Chronicle was extensively covering the “Me Too” topic. While I think kids should be aware of stranger-danger, or worse, trainer-danger, friend-danger, etc, I do not think it is my place to put them is position to read about it. That is the parents task.
Have you looked at Young Rider? https://www.magazines.com/young-rider-magazine.html
Also I find Horse Illustrated can be in line with a younger reader.
I didn’t know Young Rider existed, it looks like the perfect magazine for horse crazy kids.
My DD loved Young Rider when she was that age. The posters were routinely tacked up on her walls, and she reread the issues until they fell apart. Ahh, the memories…
Horse Canada is great. And has kids section.
Both Young Rider & Horse Illustrated are on Zulily right now for $8 or $9 for a year. I just ordered them for my kids. If nothing else I know I will enjoy reading through them because there’s no end to my horse nerdiness.
Thank you! Ordered both.
Young Rider is for pretty young kids. My daughter grew out of it pretty quickly and felt too old for it by age 11. We get Horse Illustrated now and it seems to be a better match.
I started with Horse Illustrated when I was about that age. I loved the posters in the center!
A few years later I moved on to Equus and Practical Horseman.
Thank you for the Zulily heads up!! Just ordered both subscriptions for my 11yo.
