Looking for recommendations on the best memory foam/Ogilvy knock-off half pads – I’m only going to need it for a few months, so I don’t want to spring for an Ogilvy when I presume there are other less expensive options that can do the job! TIA!
IMO, there really isn’t anything very close to a true ogilvy, the memory foam will always be a bit different. However, acavallo and green hawk make ones that are similar.
Buy a used one on face book. I see them come up all the time.
What size do you need? I’ve got a Hunter one I need to find a new home for! It’s too small for my new saddle…
It’s not the same, but lami-cell also makes a memory foam pad. It’s much cheaper, and not as pillow-y, but I like mine.

It is quite a bit firmer than the Ogilvy but it is a good pad, I use it for one of my horses who needs a bit of padding under the saddle until he muscles up. It is also much cheaper but good quality.

I actually sold my ogilvy and bought the lami-cell. I found the ogilvy effected my saddle fit.
The Ogilvy fixes my saddle fit on this horse, so that’s the effect I’m going for in this case! The horse’s owner has an Ogilvy that I’ve been using, but it is a regular and just a little bit too short, my saddle is an 18.5 and really needs the large. So, although I’ll only be riding this horse a few months while mine rehabs an injury, I’m trying to pick up something that will be a little better fit. The FB groups are a good suggestion, as used would be ideal, but needing the L instead of the R size unfortunately seems to narrow the options, and I may need it sooner than I can find one used. And just to complicate matters, I really would prefer to find a white one in case as I will probably end up taking this horse to a show or two!
I haven’t advertised yet (being lazy) but I am going to sell my white hunter oglivy (large) and my custom jumper oglivy (medium). I haven’t washed them yet and they are slightly used so I can sell them for cheaper if you are interested.
I love my Wilkers. The cover is not removable, however. http://shop.wilkers.com/hunter-jumper-memory-foam-half-pad/?utm_medium=googleshopping&utm_source=bc
I’ve heard that Sweet Alyssa Equine makes really good ones. And she also has a version that uses latex for better shock absorption and breathability.
Back when I did use an Ogilvy however, I found it was worth it to just buy the real thing. Holds up much better than any of the knockoffs.

Adding on to what greywithchrome said, I found mine to be a really good investment. It has saved my saddle fit several times and even though mine is a few years old it still looks new. I find them especially wonderful for when I am bringing a horse back into work, it just fills in all the weak muscle spots really well.

I’m possibly interested in the Hunter pad…not sure how to send a message through here!
egrubbs, click on the poster’s username and you can send them a private message.
egrubbs sorry, hunter pad is already on its way to me
Problem solved, thanks to wishfulthinking, and thanks for the backup suggestions!! Glad to hear everyone is happy with how the Ogilvy’s hold up. It is what enables me to use my saddle on this horse so it will be good to have one that fits a little better for the months that I will be riding him!

Well dang you! Haha. I guess that’s what I get for playing dressage all day and not checking the COTH! Actually I should blame the fact that I bought a new saddle and it doesn’t fit my ogilvy!
Honestly, IMO, I am not a huge fan of the ogilvy pads. They are really bulky and I feel it would change the fit of a saddle. I have always been told by saddle fitters that just a plain square pad is all you should need with a properly fitting saddle. However that being said…I believe Wilkers has a knock off that looks pretty decent. Good luck and hope you find what you’re looking for!
I have one of the latex and one of the foam pads from SweetAlyssa and I’m very happy with both. The latex one is much thinner than the regular Ogilvy are.
LOL egrubbs, you snooze (or in this case play dressage) you lose :lol::lol: Being at home waiting for family to arrive instead of being at the barn saved me! Ha.
ThoroughbredLuver, thanks but this for a temporary fix on a horse I will only be riding for a few months, so the thickness of the Ogilvy in this case is helpful to the saddle fit rather than making it fit too snugly. On my own horse the Ogilvy would be too thick.
