I have a Western saddle I need to sell; I’ve tried craigslist and ebay plus horseclicks and tack trader - no luck. Any ideas? I’m dying to get one of the new Schleese Western saddles on order but I’ve got to sell this one first! (I will also need to sell one of my kidneys to pay for it!)
ah, I don’t social media so I’m out of the loop on that! Now that you mention it, I have heard about folks selling things there.
On consignment somewhere. More people will see it in a tack shop than in your home.
Sold a couple saddles on there, but otherwise I would say consignment shop.
I don’t shop for used tack anywhere by FB now.
thanks folks… here in Austin, we don’t really have any tack stores (just Dover), but I may be able to find a good one in San Antonio or Waco. appreciate the input
What brand of saddle?
Facebook Marketplace and eBay get my votes. Unfortunately, you might get a lot of tire-kicking on Facebook. Some people might want to “test” the saddle (don’t do it!) or will ask you to ship.
We don’t have much out here in the way of consignment shops, but there are a few a couple hours away.
Have you tried posting the add in a pet store or talking to your vet or farrier to get the word out?
You don’t mention what kind of saddle it is. A western saddle is pretty vague.
You need to post it where it will sell.
For example, someone mentioned “ranchworldads.com”. But if your saddle isn’t a cowboy, cutter board, cow horse or rope saddle it’s most likely not going to sell there. Trying to peddle a 1970 something Herford pleasure or trail saddle is going to be tough there.
Also condition and price may be the issue. Are you sure you have it priced correctly and is it a semi-desirable or recognizable brand/maker?
I’m so sorry for not getting back to this thread! I thought it had died
Hope it’s not too late to resurrect it…
My saddle is a custom Comal Saddley from New Braunfels TX. It is a copy of saddles they made back in the 70s (this one was made in 2014) specifically for Arabs - FQHB and short tree. It is very pretty with lots of tooling and upgrades but ultimately is a working saddle, good for sorting, roping, etc. I did list it on RanchWorldAds but so far have only gotten scammers replying to the ad. It is priced very well, but is a small size - 14.5 - so I think that’s the problem with selling it.
I’ve found that the best way to sell a saddle is actually by word of mouth. Otherwise, I would agree that a consignment shop is your best bet, although you may have to wait a few months for it to sell. Maybe put up flyers at your barn and barns in the surrounding area to advertise it?
