Best places to look for used saddles

I’m looking for a specific saddle and have not had great luck searching.

I’m looking for an 18” Amerigo Vega, normal flap length preferably, +1.5 tree. I know these are adjustable, but I don’t live in an area where I could easily do this. Budget is $1500. Could stretch slightly, but would prefer to be in that range.

Potentially open to other Amerigo saddles, a Vega is just the only one I’ve tried.

I found nine fairly recent COTH threads that deal with shopping for used Amerigo saddles. Maybe one of them will be helpful. I did a Google search for “chronicle of the horse forum shopping for used Amerigo saddle.”

Former owner of one of my horses had an Amerigo Vega made for him and offered it to me for $3,500 but I passed on the offer.

Thank you. I tried the same terms in google and didn’t see any very recent posts. I have found a few saddles, but they either seem to have medium trees, or wide.

I’ve been saddle searching for what seems like an eternity. Generally if I stick what I want into Google, all of the sources come up. It’ll list a bunch of saddles. Some exactly what I’m after and some close to.

I don’t know if there are different models within the Vega line. I’ve owned several Amerigo saddles, but not Vega.

You could check The Saddle Bank in the UK or you’re open to ordering from overseas.

Otherwise Fineline tack, Highline tack, Equestrian Imports, Galloping Grape, Pelham Saddlery, Aiken Tack Exchange, Maryland tack exchange, Happy Horse tack shop, Good Apple Equine Consignment, are all used saddle shops that I’ve bought/sold from or otherwise dealt with/browsed.

Also search Facebook. There is atleast one Amerigo specific group on there too.

Sometimes it’s just patience. That specific configuration might not be out there at this very minute.

I too am looking for something very specific but I’ve found that even searching in google, if done multiple times in one day has yielded different results. I will leave things out, add things in, change the order of the sequence of words and every time I’ll find a new (to me) consignment shop and saddles I didn’t see in the previous search. The same experience with Facebook. I also have found that there are lots of advertisements that do not include all the information I am looking for so I’ve been emailing a lot, sometimes with pleasant surprises as a result. I would also (and have) post ISO of ads on Facebook.

Look at pre-owned saddles available in England. I’ve imported four saddles - 2 dressage, 1 jumping and 1 cross country - at significant savings versus comparable saddles at US asking prices.

I don’t know what +1.5 is the equivalent to, if its wide / extra wide there’s one here within your budget:

Saddles Direct have one in medium:

And it looks like +1.5 is medium:

Strike that, M+1.5 is Medium Wide to Wide, so the first two links I posted wouldn’t be suitable.

How do you find these? eBay? Or somewhere else?

I’ve had good luck with HighLine Tack. Their shipping/trial policy is one of the best I’ve seen and their customer service is excellent.

I’ve used The Saddle Bank but there’s also Saddles Direct, Sheepham Saddles, and UK FB groups.

Thanks!

I suggest contacting a fitter who is nearest to you: https://worldequestrianbrands.com/pages/saddle-fitters

They may have some contacts or (like my fitter) keep a small stock of new/used/demo Amerigo saddles. Alternatively they have a connection to the demo stock at World Equestrian Brands.

They may be able to suggest an alternative such as “I don’t have a Vega, but I have a 18” +1.5 tree of this model"

My saddles from England either came up during my google searches or I found them by shopping on the UK ebay site. I also bought a bunch of foxhunting items like a flask, a couple of hunt whips, horn, and saddle sandwich case there, and several dressage bridles and a few bits. My experience is that most UK sellers are quite willing to ship their items to the US.

Just go to www.ebay.co.uk and log in to the UK site using the same ebay username and password you have for the US site. It is seamless and your paypal account is available too.

Thanks very much!

Thank you so so much for all of the suggestions.

Pelham has an 18”, +1.5 in brown but’s it’s ~ $2500

They also have an 18” for ~ $2000 but it doesn’t have a tree size. I’m sure they’d measure if you know roughly what to look for.

Jumping in here from my thread on saddles… I brought the saddle that “seems to fit/horse isnt objecting” to Good Apple Equine COnsignment in Ocala. There, Georgia used a saddle fitting tool (that thing that looks like a rib cage) on the saddle then we compared various 17.5 saddles on consignment. We found a few that “fit”… and one that felt good for me as well. Im now trying it for a few days. And of course I’ll get a fitter out if I do purchase it. They have an online presence and lots of saddles… you might look there.
(The saddle that I’m trying is a WestHill and Sons. The saddle that “seems to fit” is a Custom WOlfgang Solo, no longer made. The Schleese saddles that were specificly fit to the two horses dont seem to meet their approval, I thought it was all me but no it was the saddles).
