Best places to sell saddles?

Hello all! So I recently invested in a new (to me) Butet, but that means I need to sell my Beval Natural! What do y’all find to be the best place to sell saddles? Ebay, facebook groups? Just kind of want to see people’s experience and opinions! TIA!

Most people will want to try a saddle to see if it fits, so maybe advertise on facebook for local groups or in local tack stores/feed stores? You could also speak with riders at other barns and see if anyone is looking for a saddle, that’s how I sold my old county.

You could post on forums that have posts from all over the country, but saddles are items that should be tried so you may not get as many hits on those sites. I know some people will buy from farther away, but they usually already know the make and model/size they are looking for and that it will fit.

Best of luck, saddle selling is rough!

Thanks so much for the advice! Yeah, I’m in a few local FB groups, so I’ll definitely start there!

I have recently sold saddles on facebook groups, ebay, and the tack hunter app.

Facebook is best for making the most profit, especially if you have a popular saddle. You will only have to cover the paypal fees. The tack hunter app and ebay take a big chunk of change (tack hunter used to take less than ebay but IMO it looks like they now take just about the same).

I had a saddle at a shop on consignment but ended up selling it myself anyway, so sadly don’t really recommend that (plus they usually take 25% on the low end).

If you’re trying to sell on facebook, try searching “ISO” and some keywords as well so you can post directly to people looking for what you have.

I sell on FB groups and have had the best luck that way. If you use PayPal for your transactions, you can include “terms and conditions” on your invoice, so if you go with a trial you can have some level of protection for you and the buyer. I just sold a high end saddle from Canada to the States and included a trial period (happily not actually needed!)

The other thing that’s nice about using FB is you can chat a little bit more easily with a buyer and suss out what vibes you get from them (very scientific :)) and you can also poke around the account a bit and make sure they seem like a real person.

And, as another poster mentioned, more profitability.

Thank you everyone for your awesome input! I will definitely try FB groups first, and hope for the best! I appreciate it!

I had posted a saddle for sale on FB in various groups recently. A high end saddle, Butet, in fabulous shape, with leathers, Sprenger irons and cover.

I got responses; requests for more pics which I sent; requests for a slight price decrease which I agreed to and then a trial request which I also agreed to if seller pays return shipping and prepays for saddle with PayPal. All those interested then dropped off the face of the earth! I believe they expected me to ship saddle with out prepaying - how can that be? One can’t get anything to try without paying for it!

I hope you have better luck than I!

I have had the greatest success in both buying, and selling, saddles on local Facebook sites. As well as the bigger national ones.

Make sure you have good, clear, photos of literally every inch of the saddle. Back, front, both sides, billets, underneath, etc. I also take pictures with a measuring tape (I use the fabric measuring tape kind), of the gullet, seat, size, flap size, etc.

Good luck OP!

Oh gosh, mine isn’t even that sought after…I’ll take all the luck I can get! I really need to sell this saddle!

I took good, clear pictures, but maybe not enough. But I’m always open to taking more! Thanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate it!

I had a custom saddle at a local tack consignment store for two years with no bites. I then sent it to HighLineTack and Suzy sold it in about two months. Since then she sold a second saddle for me and one for my barn owner - both in about a week. Her consignment fee is relatively low at 17%.If you’re interested in going that route, I’d highly recommend her.
