Best portable toilet for trailer?

If you don’t have a full LQ trailer, what do you use for a portable toilet?

I used to have a chemical flush toilet, but it was a pain to empty and clean. Yuck!

Then my BO who does competitive trail rides clued me into the bucket-and-kitty-litter approach.

The Luggable Loo seat and lid can be bought separately, and any 5 gallon bucket works. Mine is a lovely orange model from Home Depot.

Add some kitty litter and small trash bags (trash compactor bags work well, they’re thick and opaque) and you’re all set. There are also special bags with chemicals, but I haven’t tried them.

What other options have people come up with?

Like you I went the chemical/water route- disgusting.

so I got a 10 dollar hunter’s potty of a metal base, a seat that locks onto it, and a roll of good trash bags. Add kitty litter as needed  Done. Sawdust works fine too  If you do the sawdust route, you could compost it. Use ultra cheap TP, too, it breaks down fast.

I won’t ever pay to have a toilet in a trailer. One more thing to tear up and drain. Yuck

What a clever invention. Thanks for sharing info about it.

I remember the time I was stuck in New York City with my empty horse trailer. I waiting to meet up with a friend. There are NO public toilets around. I couldn’t drive to a toilet because it was a small miracle I found a parking spot big enough for a horse trailer in NYC at all. I really really had to go. So I admit to weeing inside my horse trailer on a big pile of wood shavings. If my horse can do it, why I can’t i?

I wish I had your Luggable Loo back then!!!

too funny…how innovating we can all get!

I knew of the ‘kitty litter’ idea…and for an upcoming trail ride date, I decided to take one of the older canvas folding ‘chair in a bag’ style chairs I had. Then, cut a circle out, the size of the small buckets we all use for horse stuff/bathing, etc.
into the trailer goes this set up: the cut out chair is unfolded, set up with a small bucket that fits snug /flush in hole… lined in a kitchen sized trash bag, with kitty litter in the bottom. On top of that, goes another bucket, same size…with about 2 inches of water. beside set up goes the biodegradable wipes, and the extra kitty litter.
top bucket used for ‘number one’ and gets thrown out, refilled with new 2 inches of water. Top bucket is removed for ‘number two’ and kitty litter is added on top, and plastic bag closed/ready for disposal. Re set both for next time!

I have a potty similar to the Luggable Loo that I purchased at Walmart. Works great.

These are great ideas! I have wanted something for my trailer–but not the chemical route. I have to admit kitty litter never occured to me–duh! Luggable Loo, eh? Must look into that!

Bags and kitty litter are a great idea! I have a lugable loo that I have been dumping and rinsing with bleach after each use, but I think I’ll try the bags/kitty litter method in the future. Sounds much easier!

I’ve been using the luggable loo for years, since I horse camp a lot without having an LQ trailer. I started out with lining the bucket with a kitchen garbage bag and using cat litter. The bag could go into the trash but was still heavy and stinky. I usually have some bags of pine pellet bedding in the barn and decided to try that. Much better! Don’t need a bag liner either. I just dig a hole in the manure pile and dump the bucket there. It dumps clean, quick rinse and ready to use. Not stinky, cheaper too. But only put a couple of inches of pellets into the bucket at first as they really expand!

yes- I like the pelleted bedding idea, or sawdust, or shavings.

The kitty litter is a big step up from the chem toilet. DISGUSTING. LOL

i’ve always used a bucket and shavings, since i already have plenty with me. i take the slightly soiled stuff out of the horse box and put it in a bucket next to my potty bucket. i start with a layer in the bottom of my bucket, and just add as necessary to cover/absorb whatever. biodegadable wipes and i’m all set.
and i’d much rather pee in my trailer instead of a public restroom–i prefer my horses’s germs over random strangers–ick!

Ditto the above. I used to use a bucket with cat litter until last Christmas a friend of mine gave me a toilet seat that snaps onto a 5 gallon bucket. . . perfect. I use cat litter, a garbage bag and cheap TP. throw it all out when finished.

The Toilet seat came from a hunting store source.

If you’re willing to pay for it look at the Incinolet (an electro-evaporative toilet). We have the 110v RV model in our weekender LQ and it is satisfactory. It has some limitations, but as long as the users are adults it’s a good choice.

The Pett

The Pett toilet, sold online from Rei camping store. And wag bags. Best.potty.ever.

The wag bags are a little pricey, but they work just as advertised and can be disposed of in the trash. They can be used more than once.

I’ve been using mine for horse camping for three years and love it. As another poster mentioned, much better than using the public toilet.

I set mine up in the back of the horse trailer with my tack truck as a table and am good to go…haha

So easy for those middle of the night trips.

Really? People carry their own poo around in their trailer? Yuck. I just go in the woods, let’s just call it returning biomass to nature. No way would I haul that around with me.

LOL Bless your heart. Never been horse camping in a developed camp with 50 other trailers around? I’d rather you not take a dump in my backyard

No, you are right, I have not – I do avoid such areas. I promise I will not leave any presents on your porch!

I guess it’s not that developed if there are no “facilities!”

I have always piddled in my trailer. I have a small supplement bucket reserved for the purpose, a plastic trash bag for the TP. You guys are actually pooing in your trailers? That part doesn’t bother me. The worrisome part is…where are you tossing those poos when you’re done? Human excrement is a bit different from dog, horse or cat when one comes upon it on a trail. I met up with a large human pile in a Puerto Rico rain forest once and I have to say, it was just about the most revolting thing I’ve met yet. You trail-pooers, I sure hope you carry a trowel with you and dig deep holes!!

lol so you wake up at 2AM, it’s pitch dark, there’s no moon, and it’s flippin’ cold out there… I have two choices- get dressed and walk to the facilities, or use my white trash LQ ‘bathroom’. I know which one I’m going to choose

Yes, you are supposed to bury!

The “wag bags” contain a powder which instantly turns waste into an odorless gel. From the web site:

•Uses odor neutralizers, not perfumes, to eliminate unpleasant odors; decay catalyst initiates decomposition
•Environmentally friendly, landfill-approved WAG BAG waste bags can be disposed of in trash with regular garbage
•Permitted by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for use on rivers and in Wilderness Areas where toilets are required
•Recommended by the Leave No Trace program in conjunction with the National Forest Service

It is really no different than a living quarters toilet or a porta potty except you don’t have to empty a black water tank. If you think sitting on a potty in the back of a horse trailer is gross, try emptying a black water tank…ewwww.

And I don’t carry my poo around in my trailer - it is disposed of quickly. And at the risk of providing too much information, I have never had to poo while on the trail. Usually don’t have to go potty at all but then we don’t generally ride for more than four hours or so. I can go that long even at my advanced age.

Going potty outside at the campgroud??? I would have to be a lone camper to do that. Even public areas with campsites placed far apart do not afford that kind of privacy.

Using the portable toilet in the back of my trailer is 100x better than going to the public restroom.

Just my opinion.
