Best protective boots for turnout?

Preferably something breathable yet durable?

My young mare just got shoes for the first time about three weeks ago, she wears bell boots all around because the farrier had to shoe her “full”, and over the last week or so she has come up with some small scrapes on the inside of her front cannons - possibly from cavorting in the muddy pasture, or maybe from just lying down and getting up with the shoes on. Today there was a little bump and a bit of puffiness in the splint bone area (no heat or lameness), and she has an old, cold splint on the opposite for leg which never bothered her and has been there for about eight months – but I don’t want to tempt fate so I’m going to have to bite the bullet and boot her for turnout now. :frowning:

I put Woof boots on her tonight for turnout, but I’m looking for something reasonably inexpensive that she can wear every day when out – preferably something reasonably breathable and that won’t rub her. I use boots when I ride her, and hopefully can get the BM to remove the boots in the morning when she is brought in so she doesn’t have to wear them 24/7.

Recommendations?? After 30-40 years in horses this is the first time I’ve ever had to put boots on anything for T/O. I hate to do it, but the alternative is risky. She is out overnight for about 12 hours.

I always had the best luck in turnout with the Ecogold brushing boots dusted with some baby powder to prevent rubbing. I liked them in white, I thought they stayed incredibly cool and dry in the summer. Good luck!

I find that dirt is usually the culprit of rubs so I always have a clean pair to put on to prevent that. So I go to a used tack store and get their less than show quality ones

Thanks - ha, LOVE these - damn they are on the pricey side, though…

Yes, I thought about getting some cheapies and doing the swap out thing (good suggestion), will stop by the used tack shop today.

Premier Equine makes several that might work. The air cooled eventing boots are easy to find in the US. I ordered some turnout boots (which are nice airprene and easy to clean, but may be more coverage than you need) for a client directly from the UK, and they were affordable and arrived relatively quickly.

I tried that and finally gave up on the cheap ones! Even with my mouthy destructive type the Ecogolds did best and most importantly breathed well! They also don’t need to be super tight to stay on well. Second best is some fuzzy boots, still liberally coated with baby powder.

I like the Le Mieux mesh brushing boots for turnout.

Thanks, joie - they are certainly more reasonable than the Ecogolds: $42 vx $89.

I have the Professionals Choice Ventech brushing boots - my go to for riding - I put them on her last night since they are more breathable than the Woof boots and stay put pretty well. They are my competition boots, though - and I’d like to keep them reasonably clean (they’re white.)

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions!
