Best Robot Cameramen or Automatic Video Systems

It seems that they keep pushing the date back? Originally, orders were supposed to start shipping in March, then June, now Aug/Sept? On the website, all I saw was early fall. I think they started taking pre-orders summer 2015? I can’t seem to find one review from anyone online that’s actually received the product. Kinda glad I didn’t pre-order now… Can’t imagine paying for something and waiting 9+ months to receive it.

There was a delay with the soloshot2 as well. I know it’s frustrating, but I reckon it’ll be worth the wait, especially if their customer service remains the same.

Refer to this string - we keep it updated with SS3 delivery status, etc.

I paid for my PIXIO, gosh…a year ago now??? The shipping date keeps getting changed, but i remain hopeful that at some point soon, i will receive mine. There are many posts about how it is a scam, etc…but i do not believe that to be the case. It seems they ran in to some glitches during production, and that the demand was higher than anticipated. I do hope it will be worth it, once i receive the setup…will let you know!

More than a Robot Camera

I have followed the threads here and looked at the products offered. I have something new that I’d like to share. What if you could record your lessons??? What about taking lessons with any trainer in the world without the costs involved to have them transported to you or you to them. Do you have a horse for sale and the person interested doesn’t have time right away to see the horse or they want another new video at a different angle. What if they could see the animal in real time. Is your horse in training and your at work when your trainer rides them. You’d really love to see your horse but don’t have time to get to the farm everyday to watch your trainer ride. You can watch from work or home or anywhere. What if Distance or indoors or outdoors was not a factor. No tracking bracelet required. Camera auto tracks and zooms in and out on its own. Also there is a library of all recordings available at all times. I would like to present the itrainon system. Please check it out and let us know what you think of our new product. www.itrainon.com

The soloshot says it works best if you’re 50’ to 200’ from the tripod - how do Dressage Riders find this to work for them? We have a partially covered arena with a ClearSpan and mirrors at both ends… putting the tripod outside of the arena would give it an obstructed view. I also read a review on Amazon from a rider that said the Tripod only tracked from one side to the other (like following a skier down a hill) and thus, would lose the rider on a circle. Has anyone had this issue? And how do you overcome the distance requirement or is that not really an issue?

The Soloshot 2 uses GPS so the accuracy of the system depends on how many satellites are in view.

I’m in Southern California and regularly use my Soloshot on the tightest setting (maximum zoom) and ride within 20 feet of it with no problem. I’ve even ridden within 3 feet of it and while I filled the screen, it tracked me just fine.

Solo shot versus Pixio? Any thoughts? I’m also starting to think about one of these (if I can scrape of the $$$)!

Pixio is currently your only option for indoor use; it has no auto-tilt capability. SoloShot2 works great outdoors, has a much larger tracking range, pans and tilts, and is built like a tank, but setup time is lengthy and fussy by comparison to the Pixio. SoloShot3 has an integrated 4K camera and simpler setup but is still vaporware; also the piece that supposedly allows indoor arena use will not ready at the time the SoloShot3 is released, so there’s no guarantee it will ever materialize and work properly.

I don’t find the less than 5 minutes it takes to set up my Soloshot to be lengthy.

Agreed.

In researching these, there are also bases that allow for you to use your iPhone, iPad, etc. They aren’t marketed to athletes, though. Anyone have experience with these platforms - one example I’ve seen is the Swivl? They are less expensive, but not sure they’d meet the need…

I ordered a Swivl back in 2013 and ended up sending it back. The tag needed a direct line of sight (no turning away from the camera) and the range was very limited (less than half the ring if I remember correctly). Also, there was no auto zoom feature. When I forget to charge my SS2 I still use my iPhone on occasion, but I just prop it up somewhere in the ring or use one of those spider mounts to hold it. We go in and out view, too close and too far to see anything, but that happened with the Swivl, too – except the Swivl would get stuck looking to one side if that is where I happened to turn or go out of range. There is a good chance they have improved the Swivl in the last four years, but at that time it was meant for presentations in conference rooms.

I’m pretty sure the Soloshot2 will spin 360 unlimited, so it should be no problem to circle around it. I’m 95% positive on that, as I’m pretty sure I’ve gone around it in that way when doing XC before, but most of the time I’m in an arena with it set up outside the fence - so then technically it is panning. I know for sure that it will rotate at least 180* as I just past it that way today and it was fine.

I have been well over 200’ away and it still follows me without issue (but I’m pretty small in the picture because of the limits of the camcorder’s zoom - a function of the camera, not the SS).

I try to keep my SS/camera at least 15’ away, but have had it within 8-10’ at the arena fence before with no issue. I did have a time or two where I passed really close (<5’) and was in the trees…and the system got confused as to which GPS location was the base versus the tag and ended up recording the sky (!) - but that is totally avoidable and you could easily have it in the center of the arena and circle around it as long as your circle was a 20m or so.

SS2 doesn’t have “indoor” capability as it requires a continuous GPS signal for both base where the camera is and the tag which you wear. However, I have been able to use it in a covered outdoor arena when I had the camera outside with a view of the sky and spent most of the ride towards the rail. If you stopped and sat in the center of the covered arena for awhile, your tag might loose the GPS signal.

The SS3 (currently in production) has an add-on indoor accessory which will allow you to be completed inside (ex: basketball gym) and maintain recording and link from camera to tag up to around 150’ I think.

I’ve also gotten use to the process, so it goes quickly. I turn my tag on when I start to tack up, so it has it’s GPS signal ready well before I am (it takes 8 minutes but can be anywhere with a view of the sky - doesn’t need to be near where you will be riding). From there, it’s about 3-4 minutes at the arena side to set up my camera/tripod, get everything turned on and paired, and then check that it’s properly recording. The battery life is quite good, so often I set everything up while my horse is still back in the cross-ties, and then it’s another 10-15min before I’m actually on and riding. I’ve had it last well-through an hour-long lesson.

I am thinking about buying a soloshot 3. At first i found the Pixio. After reading all of the above, i am starting to doubt between the soloshot and the pixio.

Looks like the soloshot is easier to set-up, because of the beacons from the pixio? It’s unfortunate you cannot use the soloshot indoors, but i don’t think i would wanna install the beacons anyway at a indoor competition… I just think it’s a little weird and they can get easily stolen. Or is it not necessary to always install the beacons??
On the other side, it looks like the pixio keeps you centered and zoomed-in more? Right now i have online seen one video using the soloshot 3 with horseriding. And i think the pixio makes much nicer videos.
Another important thing is the price, the soloshot 3 is a lot cheaper then the pixio… although it’s still a lot of money for a student like me.

I really want to buy a product that’s worth its money, so i think i would consider spending more money for the pixio if it’s worthed in comparison to the soloshot 3.
Anyone got some good advice for me?

Greetings from Belgium!

Soloshot3 is meant to start being posted out this month, so if you can hold on a few more weeks those of us who pre-ordered might be able to get back with some more info.
I have a solsohot2 and really like it, but I’m looking forward to the quick set up of the 3.

Just wanted to let everybody know that I got my shipping confirmation for my Soloshot 3 on Monday. Shipping date is in a week. The only bummer is the indoor tag won’t be ready until early 2018 but for outside it looks like it’s going to be awesome. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Also following for comparisons of SS and Pixio, esp if it’s worth waiting for SS3!

Well, I ordered a Pixio Friday and got shipping confirmation from DHL that it will be here Monday. So that’s one comparison, lol.
