Best Safety vest/body protector for lower back area coverage?

I’ve done some searches and not found this topic addressed on the forum yet - apologies if this is duplicative!

As I sit here recovering from an S4 fracture, I’m plotting my return to riding in 8-12 weeks, and thinking it’s probably time for me to wear a body protector when schooling… I’m not bouncing back from the falls like I used to.

I know that the Champion Titanium gets great reviews here, but I’m specifically looking for something with really good lower back/tailbone coverage since that’s where my existing break is and it doesn’t look like that one comes down in the back like the Tipperary Eventer Pro does. The Airowear Flexion and Outline both look like they also come farther down over the lower back.

From a fit issue standpoint, I’m short waisted and have a more full bust compared to my ribcage/waist area so the side adjustment laces of the old tipperary were always really helpful.

Thoughts on the Champion vs Tipperary, or others I haven’t considered? I’m not in the market for an air vest, just a body protector.

Thanks!

The fit between models is quite varied and it is helpful to actually try on a few, if that is possible. Pictures dont help with feel.

I have an Airowear Outlyne vest, and it does come down in back to provide a bit more protection. It also comes in a huge range of sizes, although most U.S. tack shops don’t seem to carry the full range.

U.K. shops do carry the full range, and I ordered mine from Amira-Equi. Had a great experience ordering with them, and would recommend them if you decide to go with the Outlyne and need one of the sizes that U.S. shops don’t have.

I am happy with my Charles Owen Kontakt vest. It covers my sacrum and protected me well when I landed on a tree branch a few months ago. I trail ride with it year round.
Try multiple vests before you choose one. I thought I would like a Tipperary but it was totally uncomfortable.

I am sorry about your injury. Two issues. One, vests will help with bruising, but they really cannot be counted on to prevent fractures (despite what some manufacturers may claim) , and two, if you have a vest long enough to protect your tailbone, it will push you out of the saddle. Ask me how I know. I too am short-waisted, and I love the Titanium, but I can tell you from personal experience that is will not protect your tail bone if it fits you properly.

Thank you! I know it might not totally protect my tailbone but I’m hoping it will cushion the blow. I feel like I have to do SOMEthing, if that makes sense. I will definitely look into the CO Kontakt and Outlyne! IFG, your experience with the Titanium confirms what it looked like to me in the pictures.

I’ll try to get over to Aiken, assuming there will be a good stock and variety there for me to try on.

I appreciate the help!
