Best stall fan (horse ate box fan)

Pretty much self explanatory. I’m looking at “agricultural” fans, something that can be mounted very high up on a wall or between the top of his stall bars and the roof. The barn provides box fans for all the stalls but my genius horse ate his.

I use the Value Tek 20" Circulating fan. Pricey, but lasts for years.

Mine are the 14" fans from QCSupply.com and they provide plenty of airflow (one per stall). But I’m in a fairly mild climate so my needs may be different.

Box fans are not great options for horse barns. Many brands have had recalls due to risk of fire. When you are selecting a stall fan, you’ll want to look for a sealed motor. I’ll admit I used box fans back in the day, but after seeing some posts on this BB and reading about some mishaps, I’m convinced box fans are not safe for barn use.

We use these:

They are strong, durable and safe.

We all bought ours from Tractor Supply. Wanted to make sure they were specifically for barns. Heard too many stories about fires from box fans because hay got in the motor.

Check that the fan has “enclosed motor”… sometimes listed as “TEFC” (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor.

timely post, because we’ve just arrived at fan-hanging time, and I’ve been thinking of replacing my box fan with a safer one. How do you guys hang them? We’ve always bungee’d box fans to the bars on the door, but I think these would be too heavy.

When I’ve had to hang one temporarily, it bungeed on the stall bars just fine (but I have the 14" version, so less weight than the bigger ones some folks on here seem to use). Now mine are all mounted on the wall above the stall with a lag bolt.

And I neglected to say that mine are also the sealed motor type as that was a definite must have when I was fan shopping. We don’t have Tractor Supply locally so I had to mail order from QC Supply. Farmvet also carries them but at a higher price, IIRC.

You do realize the title of this thread sounds kind of alarming?

I am thinking, horse crunching down on stall fan, hmmm, not such a good idea that!

Hope horse is ok.
Good idea to ask how to put fans where horses won’t snack on them.

We used one of those $15 misting system supermarkets sell, that have about 20’ of little hose spewing mist and that seemed to keep horses happier than fans do.
Ok as dry as we are, but in the rare wet years, that was too much humidity, didn’t dry out as it needed to.

Those misters are another choice, if fans are not right in some places.

I can’t describe it in words right now but I’ll try to get a picture. We took the fan and essentially hung it over the top of the stall front, pointing in, with controls at the bottom (some had to be unscrewed and flipped over to make that work). Tied it in place with twine, bunched up the cord to keep it out of the way. These are the bigger (22"?) super air moving fans that your farrier might put on the floor. We take them home each fall and clean them really well so they’ll last.

“Totally Enclosed Motor” and “Thermally Protected” motor were my requirements for fans when I purchased them this spring. This is what I bought: https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/H-4092/Fans-Heaters-AC-and-Dehumidifiers/Workstation-Fan-18

I drilled holes in the angled side of the bracket and mounted on the wall out of the horses reach.

Here is another one that I found after I had mine ordered: I’m not sure if this comes with a thermally protected motor or not.: https://www.midlandhardware.com/162086.html
