Best Summer Breeches?

In your experience, what are your favorite summer breeches for schooling? I’m looking to buy some nice breeches that are lighter. I don’t like riding tights and they have to have belt loops! I’m looking for $100 or under because I don’t want to be afraid to get them dirty as I’ll be wearing them all day while working hard around the barn/shows. They don’t even have to be necessarily meant for Summertime, I just don’t want “heavy” and hot feeling breeches for those disgustingly hot summer days.

I’m interested in seeing these responses, too!

I was in the same boat with you about hating riding tights for the longest time! However, Noble Equestrian sells riding tights with belt loops in dark colors that might interest you. Also, since they’re rebranding from Noble Outfitters to Noble Equestrian, you might still be able to find tack stores that are liquidating clothes that have the old branding on them - Dover just did a massive clearance on them and I got some of their signature breeches for 40 bucks each. Not bad - haven’t worn them long enough to make a decision on the heat factor though.

Otherwise, I’d look for breeches with Coolmax//icefil fabric in them. George Morris, Ovation, Kerrits, and a few other brand do those fabrics in breeches.

I’ve really liked several of the Lauria Garrelli and Cavallino Marino breeches for summer time. I have a few made out of a thinner, stretchier fabric so they aren’t thick like some of my cotton breeches. Feel free to PM me as I have a few for sale that are within your budget.

The Equine Couture Champion breeches use coolmax and are great for summer. Smartpak has a new “summer” version of the Piper, but the reviews aren’t great and I’m not impressed with the fabric (90% nylon / 10% spandex). Also take a look at the Ovation AquaX - they’re on clearance at Riding Warehouse right now.

I like the Devonaire Versailles breeches for schooling in summer. Here in south Georgia, they are the only breeches I can stand wearing in the extreme heat and humidity. They are also one of the few breeches still made as a regular rise, which I prefer, although they also have a low-rise edition with euro-seat.

The fabric is very light and silky. My skin crawls under most technical fabrics when the temperature and humidity go way up. If you want a breech that doesn’t show sweat, these aren’t for you. Others have recommended breeches like the Ovation AquaX (see post above), which apparently do not show the sweat. But personally, I need a light fabric. I have a large collection of Versailles breeches in various colors, and they see heavy use in summer here. In fact, I just broke them out as it hit the high 90s this week here.

The Versailles is also inexpensive.

I like the Ovation Aqua X breeches for schooling, the fabric is light and they repel dirt, water, and slobber amazingly well.

I second (third?) the Ovation Aqua X. They are cool, comfortable and stay clean (or at least do a good job of hiding the dirt).

Do know that the sizes might not be super consistent though. I ordered two pairs - one navy and one grey, both size 30 - from Riding Warehouse. The grey pair fits great but the navy pair fits more like a 31/32. I think RW does free exchanges so I could have sent them back, but I didn’t bother. And the silicone knee strips on the navy pair hasn’t worn fabulously - some has come off.

But despite the sizing issue and the knee patch wear, I would absolutely without a doubt buy these again, especially for summer wear.
